Not a cafe(for now) - Yami MAXIM 400

Working on putting this in order for my sister. It's her first bike. $500.00 running.
Carbs cleaned and I'm moving on to valve clearances. Ordered the special tool and when I went to order shims was told I had to buy an entire set for over $200.00. WTF... I might only need a couple if I'm lucky. What do you guys do when you need shims for valve adjustments. The guys ath the shop says they end up with lots of them and swap them around as required. He said if he had the sizes I needed he'd help me out. Just curious to know how some of you home mechanics deal with this.

Going to scuff up all the chrome (started the engine bracket on the right), strip off the ugly gold accents, paint it flat black and clear coat it.

That looks like a Maxim to me. The XS400 is a single cam twin, yours looks like a dual cam twin.

It is. I thought I saw the XS designation in some literature?? Is XS striclty a single cam twin. That does explain the confusing in trying to locate stuff.

Hello gs400

I am currently riding the exact same bike. It is a 1982 xs400j. The motor is the same dohc 400 as the same year seca but without the 6 speed transmission. This bike is capable of doing the ton right out of the box. Apparently there weren't very many produced due to the higher cost. Mine has been a very dependable ride but i will be taking it off the road when I register my cb. Good luck with your project.
 
Back in the day Yamaha used letter designations to distinguish between 2 and 4 stroke, and on or off road bikes. So, I believe the X stands for 4 stroke, and S stands for on road. There's a few other variations as well, XJ, FJ, RD, RZ, TZ, TX, YZ, SR, all of them beautiful letter combinations. ;D (would really like to find a TZ!!! :eek:) ) I believe after somewhere in the late 60's - early 70's they dropped the idea, so, really everything I just said doesn't really matter much, but it gives you a bit of the history behind it. Maxim 400's would usually be an XJ, though, but I've seen a lot of them listed as an XS400.
 
In the UK i think it is called the. xs400 yics.
Although i think this would be a later model as it has the 350 powervalve type wheels and the one in this thread has the 350lc type wheels. Could be wrong though :-\
 
Your not talking about painting the inside of the carbs gold accents are you? :eek:

I'm probably wrong and you're just talking about the bike trim, but if you were thinking about it :-X

That's the bike I had,same color too..Star Blue metallic. Bought one new(left over) best bike overall I've ever had although the sweet 1988 CBR600 Hurricane(slightly used,but excellent shape) I had was right up there as well.

I believe in the UK all XJ models were 4 cylinder, xs were twins and triples
