Not turning over

So..my battery has 07/11/10 stamped on it..not sure if this is old for a battery? But i feel like it shouldnt be.

eather way.. I bought a trickle charger for my battery, I have been having an issue with starting it and a full charged seemed to fix the problem.

Today on a full charge I rode for say 15 minutes, got some dinner and rode back home. I popped into neutral at home to park and the bike rev'd down tull turning off. Then the bike would not start up again.

I plugged her back into the charger, waiting 3 minutes, tried to kick her over and she started right up.

SO. Does this mean i simply need a new battery or is the battery fine, and something is just draining the power?

Also, Would the battery be the culprit for the bike dropping out while sitting in neutral?

ANY/ALL help will be much appreciated.

BTW the motorcycle is a 71' HONDA SL175

while i mention that? do the sparks need the battery to ignite or is it generated from the kick start?

Sorry if all of this is super n00b questioning, I am still in the very beginning process of learning this.

ALSO, one of the green caps on the top of the battery was off when i first charged, appeared the battery acid from that chamber was missing. Could this be an issue also.

If you ran the battery dry its probably toast. You do need a battery for that bike to run.

Do you have a multimeter?

I do not have a multimeter. I agree and could undertsnad the battery is toast. Before me it sat, for years.

Would the battery being fried also be a reason for the bike cutting out at idle?

Thanks

Yep. At idle the stator barely puts enough voltage out to run the bike and a dead battery can render that moot.

As Rich said, sounds like the battery is done. Try not to run the bike with the bad battery. The old electronics can be temperamental and can fry easily.

So, the three batteries available at the local autoparts store all have bad reviews as far as lifetime.

Could you recommend a good brand that I could order online?

Thanks

Can't go wrong with Yuasa. But if you mail order a battery you will have to get acid locally. If there's a motor sports place in your area or a battery store it's worth buying locally.

Motobatt, shorai and ballistic. Pricey, but good. Swap the reg/rec while youre there with the kohler mod. The old charging system will kill the batteries

Probably overkill for a guy without a voltmeter. They make expensive doorstops.

No electric foot on the SL175, right?

Try one of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Rechargeable-12V-7AH-Sealed-Battery/dp/B003S1RQ2S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1401977526&sr=8-1

They don't last very long, but at that price I don't mind replacing them every year. I used one on my 360 for a while.

Thanks for the input and tips. My mechanic just ordered me a Yuasa.. he said I should look forward to purchasing one every year, Which at 40$ after tax isn't going to break me. battery will be in tomorrow or tuesday latest...back in the MINI

Flooded cell lead acid battery should be good for at least two (and probably three) years if your charging system is in good health and you keep it on a floater in the black months.
