Been Around the Block
as the title says... just another nor-cal stoner. yes i use the word "hella". rookie rider, yet ive worked on bikes my whole life... hmmm, so here is nuthin special, a 73 cb500 woo-hoo. bought it wrecked, replaced the front end, modified some stuff. clubmans, kerker 4-1 ( only half a baffle and no end cap but thats for another thread) chopped front fender, pods, mini blinkers, hawk tank, im sure there is more that i cant think of.... questions, comments?

hey man,

nice ride, i have the exact same one.
have'nt even rode it yet, how does yours run and ride???
any tips???
have you added a one inch spacer in the frt forks between the cap and spring???
this is what the racers do to stiffen up the frt end. works very well.
any way, keep posting updates, looks great.
later.

hmmm havent tried the spacer idea... thats a good one. but then again i have put about 30 miles on it so as for ride quality im not a good source. hell i think i have about 50 miles under my belt period, and the other 20 were on a xr100. but hey gotta start somewhere right?!!? i havent even takin it over 60 yet ::) but otherwise it runs fairley well. i need a end cap for the kerker. it literally has half a baffle and thats it. crazy loud. my neighbors want me fucking dead. other than that its history is foggy. the trusted person i bought it from was told the motor was rebuilt, and done well. supposedly bored and the whole nine. but ive never been on another so i cant tell. its runs to good to tear it down to find out if its b.s. or not... one day im sure. the only issue ive had is cracked float bowl overflow tubes and a rusty tank that'll plug up the float valve. other than that she does pretty well.... oh ya just in case you couldnt tell, its rattle can with some vinyl check i had a roomate (the master printer) make up ....

cool man,
paint does'nt look bad at all.
have you herd of kreem, it is a three part cleaner/sealer for your innner tank, it costs about 30 bucks here in canada, works really slick. did it on my 175 cafe, when i installed a sloper tank. it was out of a junk yard. as for the bowls, i have a whole extra set of carbs, carbs need cleaning but the bowls are good.
the other mod, if you have'nt done it already is the ignition sys upgrade. you can get a dyna electronic ignition for these bikes, about 150$ of e-bay. i am doing this, and was told by a couple of people on here that it is well worth the money, starts and runs better. no worries on the points any more.
any way, get some more pics up on the bike, not to many people have the cb500, alot have the 550.

kreem is on the list, the igniton can wait till i have problems with the points... as for the carbs that was a fun one. had those fuckers off 5 or 6 times till i heard of the tubes cracking... even then it was hard to find the cracks. so to solve that issue there is a nice layer of solder completly covering the tubes. looks red neck as hell but they dont piss gas anymore ;D. im still only about $700 into this bike. lucky for me a coworker had bought it, had new pirellis put on, chain, carbs synced yadda yadda then on his way home from the shop was hit head on by a elderly woman. forks bent was the worst of it but more than he could handle living at an apartment.... so after buying it for a grand and putting another 600 or so into it and promptly wrecking it i got it for $400 ;D so new forks and a lot of cosmetic b.s. and here we are today. ill take some more pics if i can get out the garage today! thanks for the input...

hey,

what part of the tubes???
the ones on the inside of the bowls???
i need to take off the carbs again i'll have to check it out.
thanks for that input.
later.

yup, the overflow tubes that are pressed into the float bowls. mother fuckers they are... i had two issues, rust in the tank... fucking up the float needles so they would stick open and when parked id lose large amounts of gas if the petcock was left on... no fun. after pulling and cleaning about 5 times in a week i knew something else had to be contributing to this carb problem from hell... after visiting sohc4 somebody mentioned cracked overflows.... and sure as shit. i could barely see the cracks, but plugging one end and blowing through the other confirmed 3 of the four were cracked. so out came the plumbing solder. and a whole lot of it, i used a soldering gun and sacrificed a tip to spread it on. i was afraid a torch would suck the solder through the crack and block the tube... so far no leaks, although i do keep my petcock off anyway...

hey man,

thats crazy, how would they get cracked?
i am for sure going to check mine. i got mine running for about 5-10 mins ran good, but i lost alot of fuel through the over flow. going to adjust every thing, and check that out..
are you adding a cafe seat??
what type is the tank again, a hawk???
any way, get some more pics with some other angles.
i just got my fork seals done and added a 5/8 spacer just above the spring, and under the lock nut. it is stiffer, need to paint then add oil, then we'll see how much more they are.
also what type of rear light set up are you running???
later.

not 100% sure how they got cracked. from what ive heard cold weather outdoor storage can do it. so probably a p.o. thing since i keep it inside.
cafe seat is going to happen, when the funds will allow it. the seat is in such good shape that im not too worried at the moment
the tank is off the failed mid 70's fully automatic honda hawk ( not the newer version) i like the look of it on the 500, and its in o.k. shape. filled in the emblem mounts and played with a bunch of different paint schemes, but my little compressor cant handle an hvlp.... so i went with a satin black, only to find a few little dings i missed... another project another day!
taillight is something i made up from an old bsa style light and some sheet metal, couldnt handle the beat up fender that was on there. so this will do till i figure out a tail section. oh the blinkers are cheap chinese ebay plastic things, which work fine for $9 but they are cheap. let me know how painting the forks works for ya, ive been kickin around the idea myself...

hey man,

don't know the history on my bike, so i will check that for sure.
i just got the brake drum and caliper painted, went with yellow as an accent to the bright red.
should look good.
i might have to get a new caliper, the bleeder broke off, and i have'nt seen it work yet.
we'll see soon.
any way, did you do any rejeting to it????
i have a simailar exhaust.
ya i'll let you know how it turns out on the forks.
later.
