Don't dismiss the idea of using your original carbs. Did the mechanic say why they were "destroyed", cause honestly they just look a little dirty with some corrosion/varnish. Do a search on the site for carb cleaning and look into getting a carb rebuild kit if you want. About $25 per carb if you want new jets.
Also check the rubber o ring which is used in the rubber boot connecting the carb body to the engine. Both of ours were torn up causing the bike to run lean. Tough time starting too. We did a full carb rebuild with a new kit, but im beginning to wonder that the o ring was all that needed to be replaced. I'm picking up a set later today, and I can mail you a pair if yours needs replacing. Also check the air tubing running to the top of the carbs for cracks as well.
