October 2013 XV750 Project ;)

Don't dismiss the idea of using your original carbs. Did the mechanic say why they were "destroyed", cause honestly they just look a little dirty with some corrosion/varnish. Do a search on the site for carb cleaning and look into getting a carb rebuild kit if you want. About $25 per carb if you want new jets.

Also check the rubber o ring which is used in the rubber boot connecting the carb body to the engine. Both of ours were torn up causing the bike to run lean. Tough time starting too. We did a full carb rebuild with a new kit, but im beginning to wonder that the o ring was all that needed to be replaced. I'm picking up a set later today, and I can mail you a pair if yours needs replacing. Also check the air tubing running to the top of the carbs for cracks as well.

About the carb! Ill upload a pic. I literally looks like its been dropped. It been damaged both on the externals, and who ever was thinking of adjusting it..... Well I think they were smoking too much of the Ganja......... ;) not that that ever hurt... except they really hurt the internals as well. It might be possible to salvage it. But I thought since this is the main part of the engine. I should have a proper intact carb, without the fear, of burning to rich or lean, or leaks of any kind!

I will think about cleaning them and looking at the needles, but the one, as you can see clearly, jiggles about and when turned doesnt come out... IN or OUT.!

BADNESS!

I wish I was a mechaninc with years of experience. But if I was..... i would probably say..... YEAP new carbs are needed.

Anyways.

If you really want to help the build I need a carb, a tank lift kit, and a subframe ;)

Any takers. ?

I have no wielding experience or fab experience! But as they say if there is a will there is a way! So im just going to enjoy the experence with my son, even if it just leads to me parting it out. But im sure it will not come to that!

Experience is the key to life. If Life is not lived, it will live you!

Peace peeps,

And thanks for your support.

Ah. Well, like I said, there are several guys at the Virago forum with parts bikes - you can PM mjpriceisright here, too, he might have a cheap pair.

As far as lifting the tank goes if you can mock one up then there are a couple guys here who can make one. Try bradj, he's got a heart o gold.

Ok so here is what I really think, now that Ive had the opportunity to examine these carbs, with out fear of the big bad parts man coming and beating me up for not just bending over!

I think there is nothing other than a cleaning, and replacement of key equipment, such as jets, and floats. The diaphragms look ok to me, the one gasket on the right bowl needs replacement as well.

So I just need to buy a carb rebuild kit, or what ever its called. Do some boiling in lemon water, and carb cleaner. With a blessing from the round Buuta!

Rebuild it and set the jets to original stock level, not that the bike will be stock after im done! but for now.

I think 2.5 whole turns is the right amount. But im problably wrong, but im sure Ill be notified shortly. So without further Yakati smack here are the pics.

Parts look good. A carb rebuild kit will be about $50 and comes with the jets and the gasket. I think the gaskets themselves were just $10 if you just want those.

The "jet" you were referring to should be the fuel mixture screwn and should be 2.5 turns out from a soft seat. (Its the only screw you can access when the float bowl is attached). The other jets are all screwed in hand tight only.

Can you check the other side of the carb boot (last pic) and theres a little round gasket that runs on the inside. Make sure its intact.

Also make sure the rubber diaphragm isnt torn.

You can test the float bowls for leaks. Dunk them in water (gentlyl and look for bubbles.

And this is out of curiosity.. the main jet nozzle (long brass tube with holes in it).. Can you count the number of holes on the sides? Its like an alternating patern of 2-4 or 2-3.

Make sure you get the right carb kit - there are two generations of Hitachi carbs and the kits have different parts.

Beg pardon, got mixed up between the 920 and 750 carbs. 750 were the same from '81-'83.

No worries!

No second gen.... No warp core......

Damit scotty I need more power!

;D

Actually between our two carbs there does seem to be a difference with the bowl shape. You can see it in the gasket. Also showing the KL carb kit I got.

Hmm. Look at the pilot jet in your carb, OP, versus socalmike's. I would be willing to bet that the two of you have markedly different idle air screws as well.

Socalmike has a 1st gen hitachi carb, I think, and you have a 2nd.

Yes I could see the holes, but I didnt count them. I guess I could go back and count them.

Im getting mixed action on the carbs, if there is 2 generations or just one.

Ill open it up again tommorow and count the wholes. I would love to have my carbs looking like new again.

What Ill do is this. Ill buy the carb kit. 50 replace everything.

Put the carbs in water and pinsol, let them soak up the goodness. The maybe boil them with lemon or vinegar. cook them up good.

Replace the jets. adjust to 2.5 turns. slap the suckers in.

Fire up the monster. and find out, I got no spark ;)

Ill do my best first so I know I put in the good effort. If all else fails. Ill pack them up and blast them over to ya, for a little Carb R&R and come back good as new.

Peace

Here's the key:

Your carb has a pressed-in tube in the center where Mike's is a screw-in. Unscrew the idle air screw as well and you'll see that it's shaped much differently than the one in Mike's pictures.

Hey Richard Throw a pic of your bike in it current state of custom goodness would Ya.

And same to you Social Mike.....

Me peepers are getting weary.

Got lots of dreaming to do.

Ha. My XV is torn down to its component parts right now for finish work and a front-end swap from a Ninja 500. Imagine it spread out all over my garage in boxes and on shelves.

Im just restoring my friend's virago to get it road worthy. Nothing much to look at. Here's a shot of the garage though. Yamaha is outside.

Im getting confused on the carb generation thing too since we both have the same year bike. Anyways I did a search on ebay, and there are some kits with a gasket shape that will fit your carbs. Maybe look at the pieces you removed from your carb, and make sure that they all match whats listing on the posting. And maybe ask the seller if you are getting what's pictured in the ad.

Everything here looks identical to what I have, except for the gasket of course, and the pilot screw, which I think Ard mentioned.
