Oh Lord (CB500) - The Leaky Bitch (p. 31)

ha! I don't know if I have $6000 worth of tradable shit. LOL

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 06/13/2012 minor update, no pics (pg24)

I guess I need to update the craigslist ad with what trades I'm interested in. I want to own two bikes again, something two up friendly for when me and my lady want to take a trip and something that I can tinker with.

Two up wise I'm looking at GL100's, KZ100's or the like, something that can have a fairing and bags but not look like a complete recliner on wheels. Or maybe even something more modern like a Vstrom.

Then I'd like to have a 70's jap bike to customize for myself.

Okay, I'm done hijacking your build thread now. Sorry.

What part of ATL are you located in, by the way?

I actually live up in Rome. I don't make it down to the ATL too much. I was just thinking that I might need to see your bike in person one of these days.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 06/27/2012 STUPID HACKS!!!

I had to buy a replacement wiring harness because the previous owner of my bike peeled apart the harnes that was with it and deleted some wires. In fact, the whole harnes was pretty much blown apart and loose. Today, I opened up the transmission cover to install a new chain, and to look at the wiring harnes that comes off the motor. BAD NEWS!!!

So the previous owner was a f-cking hack!!! I compared the motor in the bike with the spare motor under my work bench, and discovered my good motor didn't have an oil preasure sensor. It had been replaced by a short bolt. Luckily, it was the correct thread so it didn't screw up the oil pump. I found out though that the wires had been pulled out of the sub harnes coming off the motor for the oil preasure light and the neutral light. I dug through my pile of crap wires and actually found the wires and put them back in the harness and cleaned it up, installed the new chain, and put the cover back on.

I have also started hooking up the things that go on the ends of the main harness, like the the rear brake switch, the ignition bits, etc. I really hope to have this thing on the road by mid August to ride in a benifit ride for a co-worker's son. All I have left is to finish the wiring, coat the tank, and get it cranked!!!

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 06/27/2012 STUPID HACKS!!! (pg. 25)

There seems to be some cosmic law regarding motorcycle wiring harnesses. Some unseen, mystery force that compels people to take one look at them and feel the need to grab a pair of wire snips, a roll of electrical tape, a box of wire nuts and just start going to town with it. Looking at the wiring harness of all the used bikes I've owned, which is to say every bike I've ever owned, just made me want to cry. Especially since the only thing I know about wiring is that I don't know anything about it and I should leave it alone.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 06/27/2012 STUPID HACKS!!! (pg. 25)

I know about as much as you then! But, I want to get this thing on the road for that charity ride, so I'm going to have to forge ahead as best as I can, and just keep my fingers crossed I don't spark this thing on fire...

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 06/27/2012 STUPID HACKS!!! (pg. 25)

Easiest thing might be if you can find a decent stock one on ebay or something. Of course if that isn't an option then forge ahead sir!

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 06/27/2012 STUPID HACKS!!! (pg. 25)

I've got a stock replacement harness, and it has gone a long way towards getting this thing sorted. Now I'm just trying to sort out the rest of the stuff with the wiring.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 06/27/2012 STUPID HACKS!!! (pg. 25)

I have relocated my battery tray up to just behind the seat, and I am in the process of lengthening the cables to put power to the bike. Where in the hell do I get battery cable for this thing!?! I looked at the Autozone website, and it apears I can only buy cable form them by 25ft lengths??? Also, I need 4 gauge cable, right? Can I use audio power cable for car stereos? Any other tips?

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 07/01/2012 Battery Cable Question (pg. 26)

Uhhh...Not sure but I think 4 gauge is a bit heavy. I think most battery cable is like 6 or 8 gauge.

Oh Lord (CB500) - 07/01/2012 Battery Cable Question (pg. 26)

Is too heavy a cable going to hurt anything though?

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 07/01/2012 Battery Cable Question (pg. 26)

Ok, I don't know sh-t all about the wire gauge. And it looks like I'm going to have to splice onto the power wire that goes into the starter. I don't think the starter can be cracked open to replace the wire...

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 07/01/2012 Battery Cable Question (pg. 26)

Too big - no problem.

Too small - increased resistance, heat, melt down, open circuit!

Crazy

I tell you what, I don't know the answers but I bet I know who does. It just occurred to me that I knew a guy when I was living in Raleigh that had an awesome CB550 and he relocated all of his electrics to underneath the seat. Of course, I think he deleted the electric start all together. I'm gonna shoot him a PM and see if he will chime in on this.

I built my own harness for kick only, but I see no reason why 6 guage wouldn't work for the starter. I know someone that used 4 guage to relocate his car battery to the trunk. Stereo wire may actually be better because its very flexible.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 07/01/2012 Battery Cable Question (pg. 26)

John, how long of a piece of cable do you need? I build custom battery cables at work. Give me a call with the specs and I will make you one

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 07/01/2012 Battery Cable Question (pg. 26)

Aight. Do you still need some turn signals? I still have them. COme get them before I e-bay them. (I've been so lazy that you don't need to worry about that happening anytime soon.) They're yours if you need them.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - 07/01/2012 Battery Cable Question (pg. 26)

I do. decide how long the cable needs to be and I will bring everything up and we can make it at your place so that it is just right

edit: I will be up your way most of Wednesday. If you are going to be around we can take can of it then
