Oil leak

Hello, I'm looking to purchase a 1974 CB750 for a cafe racer project. The issue is that it has an oil leak, and I'm not sure how to evaluate the seriousness of the problem. Could anyone give incite into what to avoid and what could easily be fixed with new gaskets or something? Thanks for you time!

Where's the oil coming from?

If you're not sure, clean the motor (really clean it, not just wipe it down) and then wipe off the suspecting areas with an alcohol soaked rag. Once it is clean and dry, get some baby powder and sprinkle it where a leak could be and go for a little test drive - the baby powder will turn to a little bit of a paste where the oil is leaking from.

Ok great! I'm not sure, I haven't seen the bike yet but I'll definitely ask the guy if I can do that. Thank you

I asked the guy and he said its a gasket. Hopefully he's telling the truth. We'll see I guess.

Kinda depends which gasket as to how big a problem it is.

Clutch cover gasket is an easy fix.....head gasket is not so simple.

just tie a rag under the bike if you don't feel like splitting the case for changing the gaskets. that's how i do it...

Has the motor been apart? Leaking pucks is very common, and very confusing if you aren't aware of the issue. There are four rubber pucks/coins on top of the head, you need to seal the hell out of them when they go in because they all seem just a little too thin. If it's coming from the head this is likely the reason. Unless you have a Gordon kit, the motor has to come out to get in there.
