I think where a lot of guys start to go off the rails of trust is when people post inspiration pics of bikes that are lowered with not nearly enough suspension clearance. That seems to be the biggest itch around these parts short of pod filters and clubman handlebars. I hope this doesn't turn into a thread full of words. We're already heading in that direction.
An SOHC 750 is a favorite of mine. I look forward to see where you take it.
Dude, you spent the majority of your first post bitching about how your mrs was going to bust your balls spending any money on this thing. You have got something for like $30 that you can sell for about 100 times that if you bring it back to stock. It's probably going to cost you $600 to do that (assuming you don't have to open up the motor). Then you'll have over $2K to find something else to work on.
Only saying this because I've been there / done that and I can see what the smart move should be.
I would part it out because that's where the profit is on that bike.
I love how people quote production numbers. As if it matters. There are LOTS of people cutting bikes up. Keep doing it to the iconic SOHC and see what happens.
Some of us respect the history of Japanese inline 4's and that's the bike that started it all.
Budget Build is the oxymoron here. It doesn't exist.
You will spend money if you want something to be proud of.
Check out Tune's or deviants SOHC. Be ready to budget enough money, skill and/or time to build a bike that nice out of it or be ready to be heckled for destroying an icon.
Restore it or part it out.
Or build a neato custom slammed shitbox out of it just like everyone else is. It'll be rad.
Ok I think you've got what you need from me here. As long as I'm not quoted again I'll kick my feet up and watch for a while.
I bet you thought "save a lot of grief" meant from yer wife :
The little CB has always been a favorite, like the Mustang it makes a noise like no other and has been customized into every genre in the book.
To come here with the top of the heap motorcycle icon of the 70's and throw down, you will need to be on your game... I got lucky, my CB turned out okay and that's it just okay... after a thousand hours of making mistakes and toiling over every new thing I seen, I finally realized what I needed to do was to stop looking at other bikes and just get to work. I don't have $5000 in my bike, But I spent $6000 easy in parts with most on the shelf today.
I won't be here again or at all unless I can provide some laughs or "good" advice, but if your gonna do this here... these guys know the game well and between the lines of harsh reality you can learn.

Well
Thanks deviant.
I guess the pics were misconstrued as possible Build pics when I was posting about short rear fenders and seats.
Actually had your build bookmarked and the pic of your short fender in in my file.
Yes it must handle. I ran Enduros back when I was invinceable. Got on a Trials bike and tried to ride it fast. Learned about rake and trail and not theory either! Now I'll bone up on the theory side of motorcycle suspensions .
But Too many words...
So what I'd really like to end up with might be something in this vein:
Realizing it's 550 now... But the whole package and the way it came together gives me a woody. There are other's but this one comes to mind.

Ok Tune-A-Fish Your absolutely right.
I'll be in the garage.
When I start again next winter, Ill start a build thread.

You aren't the only one guilty of this here. I also have a 1970 Roadrunner that people in a Mopar forum have beat me up over restoring instead of modding. I know the song and dance, too.
I replaced that very tank (550T) for an XS tank, so it's up for grabs. It needs repair, or a good coat of Caswell, but it could work out if you intend to go that route.

And this isn't even a build thread?
Not serious enough to pass muster. My Amateur Madness got in the way.
Got the message and I'll post a build thread in the fall.
Still be around.
deviant,
Thanks on the tank. It's really one of the better looking Jap factory tanks. I'll stay with the original lines on the 750.
...Be perfect for the 550 that's in my clients barn....But I'll just concentrate on this.
"550 they say? Why... you can't do TWO bikes!" I can hear them now - JEE-NUT-TRISE ! ARE YOU QUAZY!!???
