Ok, I'm gonna make a metal front fairing!

Ethanol

Coast to Coast
I've wanted to do it for a long time and I am gonna bite the bullet and make one. I think the first iteration (I never make anything right the first time) will be 20 gauge sheet steel with a plexiglass windscreen. Nothing too huge just enough to cover the headlight and some of the instruments etc.

I'm thinking I'm gonna make a wooden form and shape the metal to it so it's symmetrical. I'll screw it in place into the wood then tack weld it. Pull it off, weld it up and grind it smooth. Than make a steel bracket to sandwich the plexiglass in place and rivet it together for an old school look.

If it works the next version will be aluminum.

Ideas? Anyone tried it? Gonna take forever, I'm guessing.

Nice!

I don't have an English wheel but I have a planishing hammer, a bead roller, metal break, and some other tools. English wheel would definitely make it easier.

One of my favorites;

But it's easy to get carried away;

Another perspective. Uncle E sorry I only have a white haired guy with a beard instead of a gorgeous young lady.

I could stare at that second one all day.... As a matter of fact..... (printing....) LOL.
I LOVe the old NSU's.... Do a search on the NSU Rennmax. Hand-hammered aluminum quarter-fairing. If they could do that in the fifties, you can too!
For the record, I'm picking up my new project this weekend- and it WILL have a dustbin fairing. Just like that one.

The second one would be the one to stare at. The first one gets raced and paraded constantly. It's not a museum piece.

Airtech make this somewhat outrageously priced dustbin. I think its an MV replica.

Norton's even had them.

One of my all time favorites was Alf Hagon's blown JAP fuel bike. If I could find one like this I'd fit it to my Norton.

I didn't think the Airtech dustbin was too bad..... $500 seems like a good deal when you've spent $1500 on stock replacements for a VF1000R. Only thing I worry about is that fairing was meant for a 125. It's tiny. Maybe I'll steal a page from Ethanol and make my own!

The SCTA doesn't allow dustbins on solos but BUB does. If you search around the BUB site you will find a few photos of that 'bin on bikes larger than 125cc. It seems to fit and look OK on bigger machines.

I think having a good torch setup for annealing will be crucial, steel won't stretch too much, and it will be pretty hard to work in any case. make yourself a tuck shrinker as well, a fairing has quite a bit of crown to it so stretching alone won't be the best way... I'm going to do the same thing sometime for my 400f, but probably a full fairing in aluminum. of course, I have less and less time for my own stuff of late, so who knows...

hmmm... eventually im going to have to make a fairing for my 350... im curious how fast i can get her up to with a little bit more of an aerodynamic advantage ;D

I was just wondering if it was a usable tool. All the other brands I have seen have been ridiculously expensive. I know about harbor freight stuff, but for some things they seem to be ok. Not great but hell neither am I.
