Just fitted a fairing to my old Norton/Weslake spl. New Peel replica fairing. Always loved that style. Running at El Mirage dry lake it cranked off a run of 129.917 for a new class record in the 500cc partial streamlining class.

Congrats on the record!
A sweat, featherbed framed Norton Cafe bike is THE bike I wish to build/own some day. Even a nice Triton would do if a pure Norton was out of reach.

Too bad you Dad had to sell it. The Norton and I have been friends since 1967. I can't imagine being without it now. With a bit of luck we will have a few more years together. Hope whoever has you Dad's Norton decides to let you have it soon.

Not a chance. If I had as much talent as Hailwood's nail clippings I'd be 100% better than I am.

Weslake Special? Are you running a speedway motor? - can't quite make it out. There's a Norton/Jawa running in vintage class here and a friend is building a Norton/Godden. Is that a Grimeca I see?
Very nice bike, very nicely done.

Thanks for the kind words. ]Its a mid 70s, long rod, speedway motor. Don't know the exact year. I run it on VP C12 race gas. 14:1 comp. and a 45 mm Mikuni carb. The front brake is a 4 LS from an old Suzuki triple. Do you have any pics of the Norton/Jawa or the Norton/Godden? I have an old magazine out in the garage somewhere that has an article on an Austrailian Norton/Jawa. Very neat piece of work.

Sorry, don't have any pics of either. The Godden project is waiting for cooling rings to be made and fitted to run on gas. I'll see if he has any pics of the Jawa special.
Funny, didn't recognize the front brake - I should have, had one on my featherbed special

I'm going to email this link to the guy building the Godden He would be interested in seeing your bike, see if he pops in.

Nice special. I'd love to hear from the Godden man. Is he planning to run short circuits? I ran Bonneville this year on gas. 2 1/4 miles flat out. No problems. I think if you give the Godden an extra 1-1 1/2 thou. clearance on the piston he won't need extra finning.

Now I have to get the Godden finished after looking at that nice piece.
Don't know if I should run it on the salt flats or short circuit track?
I would like to find out about the class they run, it's a 500 single and I would like to fit the Shorrocks C75 supercharger I have somewhere in my garage. As Warren said, thinking of fitting cooling fins to the barrel, but may be I don't need them, I am running about .007" clearance, I know methanol would let it run cool but that's not allowed in short circuit racing.
I am going to try to run the total loss system and pump the oil up into a catch tank and try to recirculate it, any thoughts on that?
Ray.

Hello Ray, Glad to see theres someone else besides me at this lark. At 7 thou clearance I don't think you would be able to seize it. I run 5 1/2 thou. on mine with no worries. I ran alcohol for a while and the clearance was 4 thou. When i switched to gas I started seizing it. The extra bit of clearance has made all the difference. I run at El Mirage dry lake here in SoCal and Bonneville. Since the last piston went in I've made 14 runs on it. 11 of those runs were over 120. Not a lot in mileage but all were flat out. Is your Godden an OHC? The reason I ask this is the SCTA runs a class for pushrod motors and OHC motors are thrown in with two stroke and multi cylinder Jap bikes. Could be a tough class to run. I originally built it for short circuit racing and ran alcohol. I put the alcohol in a gas can and said nothing. All went well 'til I won and got chucked for using alcohol. The Aussie Norton/Jawa I mentioned earlier claimed to be able to return the oil. I tried to get the oil to return but had no success. I built a fiberglass catch tank and it has worked well. If you want details e-mail me at noisynorton@netscape.com and I can give you details. You really need to get it built. Theres nothing like the shove a single gives you as you launch. Plus they just plain sound fabulous. Last May at El Mirage a guy came up to me and stuck a video camera up my nose and asks a bunch of questions. I'm not a great interviewee but he filmed the run. There was a nasty crosswind that blew me into the cones but it still ran 122. He stuck it on youtube. If you want to check it out type "Bill Anderson at El Mirage" and it will pop up. If I can be of any help don't hesitate to contact me. Heres a photo of the bike a few years ago with the short circuit catch tank. The Bonneville catch tank is much smaller.
