Hey forum members, my name is Junior and I own a 78 XS500. Stock at the moment.

I am very new to street riding, and riding motorbikes in general. In the past two years
I've been MX riding with some dudes I work with. Caught the bug and wanted to get out on the streets.
I've riden my bike now 5 times now, all relatively short distances, but its been a hell of a time so far. Love it!

I have lots of questions, and I like the forum and its members styles.

Here's a shot of me and my bike, taken earlier this year when the snow had past.

welcome
looks like a pretty clean machine.

there's tons of great info and people here

have fun

welcome! nice bike you've got there, i like it stock! i love those xs500's, lots of cool things you could do with it!

Please dude, don't touch that bike. I normally don't care as steel is steel and it's all fit for the bin one day, but that bike is tight. Go find something else to cut up and keep that as a daily ;) .... and welcome...

Welcome! that's one sharp looking scoot ya got there! I'm sure you'll find this forum to be a wealth of information (some of it may even be useful! :D)

Ya, I love the bike and couldn't believe the condition its in when I found it. I'm not really planning on doing a whole lot to it. My plan was to lightly modify it. Things like putting a new seat on while still keeping the seat tabs, change the exhaust out, do something with the fenders (especially the rear after the new seat) clean & simplify the bars and dash up. I told myself that the changes I made must be reversable since a) its a nice bike as is and b) not sure if I will like any of the changes I'll be making. Things like the fenders and seat, I plan on finding used ones in not so great shape and tearing into them instead of whats on the bike at the moment.

Thanks for the welcome guys!

So, ya, I've slowly come around and think I may just focus on restoring this bike. Thankfully I haven't done any cutting or modding, and the only thing I need to replace that I threw out was the old rusted air box. Still have the side covers! That being said the bike does need some work to be in good, clean running order. Still fun stuff though!

After talking about it with a few people and giving it some good thought, it makes more sense to get an old beat to crap bike to modify and not something that is in relatively perfect condition.

Welcome to DTT! Those 500s are badass, or at least they can be. A buddy of mine picked one up a few years ago for $50. Its still in pieces as hes working on some other stuff, but in his research, hes found that you can do some amazing performace modifications to the motor. Its a mildly complicated engine though so plan accordingly. Keeping her stock, but with purely performance upgrades is the way to go.

heya Redcon - good lookin Yamaha. I acquired its twin sister here in Jersey this summer (pic is my avatar). Any interesting (and inexpensive!) mods to speak of? or any chance finding an air cleaner that fits it? I've got foam wrapped around the frame of the one that came with mine, but I'd love to find a proper replacement to pop in there

Love that tank shape!
Beautiful machine, looking forward to seeing where it goes. It won't need much.
