Old sealer removal

I just bought an 80 cb650c and someone had put sealer in the tank. Now it is pealing off and there are pin holes in the tank. Before I reseal it I have to remove all the old sealer so I have tried kerosene with a handful of wood screws and Ive also tried muradic acid which after a couple hours I noticed it didnt bother the old sealer a bit so I left it in over night. Still no results. My next thing to try is paint stripper I feel pretty confident this will work and would have done it the first time had I thought about it. My question is has anyone every used this method and if so how did it turn out. Also what steps did you take I figured I would just dump in a quart shake it up let it sit and drain it out. Should there be more to it than that or is it just that simple. Thank in advance for any advice or help.

Getting the Kreem out of my tank was the bane of my existence for the longest time.

Most people suggest using MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) or acetone. Apparently it's harder to get MEK in California than it was a few years ago so I used acetone - not sure about other states though. Bought a few gallons, dumped it the tank, let it sit in it at various angles for a few days, and eventually most of the liner was gone. Last time I'm ever using Kreem.

Do this in a well ventilated area and since you have pinholes I'd be careful of leakage if you want to keep your paint!

Hope this helps if you haven't already started yet.

I was just about to ask this same question. I assume it'd be wise to rinse the tank after using the methyl ethyl ketone? Especially if the tank is to be resealed.

With the time and money spent to repair a tank with holes, you'd be better off spending $100 and buying a structurally sound tank.

I was looking at tanks last night. The chemicals are pretty expensive. However, most of the ones I see on ebay for a 1972 cb350 look worse than mine. If I see one decent enough, that's definitely the route I'd rather take.

Kleen Strip gel works awesome, you want any paint stripper with Methylene Chloride, the old liners come off really quickly. To help it throw some old sections of motorcycle chain in there.

I actually just stripped one two nights ago, only took about 45 min. the old liner came out in chunks

Thanks! I've heard people using all kinds of stuff to get the old liners out. Nails, screws, etc. Will hopefully get to it by the end of the week.
