Open Pipes

Nate

Been Around the Block
What changes can I expect to need to make if I run open pipes...let's say for starters if I just took the mufflers off and had just my stock headers (78 xs650). Any body switch to opens and been lucky enough for only minor adjustments? Thanks...just curious.

It will be very loud, but not a good loud. It will sound raspy. You may have problems maintaining a steady idle. Mufflers are there for a reason like providing backpressure.

I run open pipes on my 73tx 650 I have 79 engine with 34mm carbs.( that have since been custom baffled) -to much for me I could not hear myself think.
This does not change what I have done and would do again I have a set of velocity stacks. I rejetted the mains my carbs custom spacers to ajust for separate cylinder temps
and switch pilot from 132.5 to 135.
The only thing I would worry about is what does johnny law say? In connecticut they are sticklers for loud pipes. Since I run vintage plates my insurance is cheaper and they can't say boo to the noise from my pipes. I think she sound like an old italian racer from the 50's. real smooth but a little throaty.
I hope to post a vid soon. I am rebuilding my battery box so she is apart at the moment so I have room to work

you might check xs650garage or 650 rider.com

thanks for the replies....anybody run those short (17 inchish) reverse cones like Mikesxs/emgo sells? How do those sound??

you get the idea!!

Do us all a favour and get some kind of pipes on it. I know WE all love the sound ...but the truth is Loud Pipes Risk Rights

I've never gotten complaints about mine. I've once had a local cop walk around the bike complimenting it. I suppose it depends on where one lives. Texas is big and I cannot see riding the bike out of state.

Lucky! I got chewed out by neighbours on the next block just letting my XS650 idle in the garage to balance carbs :D

Nate, switching to opens will, at minimum, mean rejetting to spray more fuel (better breathing means more air means lean mixture with stock jets)

Not a big job really... but you may want to consider something to mellow out the sound. I haven't done anything to the XS and it already sounds mean... I drilled 3 x 1/4 holes in each baffle on the Airhead and it sounds like a German/Italian love child now.

Or slap him with a beaver pelt :)

Now that you mention it, a neightbor did call the cops on me once, but the cop just blew it off and checked out the bike. The weird thing was that it was a new neighbor that I never met, and it was pretty early in the evening. I think his wife told him to pull the thong out of his ass and call the cops. Surely no man with a drip of testosterone calls the cops; instead they walk over and ask to keep it down a bit.

I run a single one... I think it sounds great.

I have a 4-1 so it sounds a bit like a sport bike - it is a bit raspy b/c it's glass.

I ran open pipes on my bike for a total of 30 mins... Sounded like a F1 Car, hah.
My neighbor happened to BE a cop and apparenaly he doesn't like bikes... spent more time bitchin at me and telling me he was going to make sure my bike was taken off the road. ::)

thanks canada dan, that was the information I was looking for....I by no means plan on running with no mufflers....I was simply wondering if it would lean the bike out...my bike is cold blooded and runs on the lean side no matter what....just wanted to know if running free flowing pipes would open up a nightmare in carb adjustments for me again....thank all!!
