Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey ( Finished pics ,video, )

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Drain oil and add fresh but have a Q : would to tight of throttle cables cause this issue ? I know there needs to be lil play at the throttle just trying to eliminate everything to find a cause !

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Well you do want a few mm of play, and make sure it's not being pulled when the bars are full to the right and left.

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

With a two into one cable I should adjust from the throttle down to the carbs or other way around ?

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

I adjust starting at the throttle. Easier to get the cables equal length that way- ie. Both carbs have the same pull.

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Thanks guys been looking on the makuni site and the manual for my carbs . Have one carb apart and have found the float level for a starting point . Wish it was a lil more about how to tune them but will get it. !

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Well, thankfully, Mikunis are pretty easy. Main jet, pilot jet, needle and needle jet. Float height. Slide cutaway if you've got a need. I just do plug chops until I get it. Worked pretty well on my GT380.

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Another thing is to DOUBLE CHECK that the slides are going up together and closing all the way (well, as far as the are supposed to of course) I had a buddy that had one sticking for some reason on his XS 650. I remember there was an issue with how the splitter connection was made, it wasn't smooth inside and caught on itself here and there. Just another thing to rule out! ;)

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

I checked off cables other then adjusting them as carbs still off bike . And the petcocks are checkhis wronged off as i just drained the tank of gas that was in it to be replaced with fresh gas . Looked over the float level and its asking in inchs " .86 to .94 " from the lip of the carb body so where is a good place to start .86 or someplace between ?

Also when i pulled the bowls off found that one carb looks clean and other looks tarnished so my thinking is the clean one keep fuel in it and other would drain out or is this wrong thinking ? The bottom of the tarnished bowl was yellowish film which came right off with cleaner . But what does this tell me ?

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

I would agree with your theory that the dirty carb was draining, the residue was drying up with the air vrs the side full of fuel having no air to cause it to varnish. so that side had a stuck float keeping fuel off maybe? Is the float hanging up and keeping the valve closed on that carb?

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

So I've cleaned the carbs out and made sure nothing was gummed up. Was reading a thread here http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=16745.0 very good for newbies like myself . So what I've done is floats are good but changed jet needle one space up as I'm thinking its getting to much fuel . Now please correct me if I read it wrong . Also after Bruno said about both slides moving together once I remounted the carbs I looked . LOL well I never looked when I started the bike up and looking now right one moves almost to half befor left one does oops ! So the plan now is to get them adjusted right this time and fresh oil and start it back up and see where I'm at !!!

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Well with the slides so far out of sync I think you may have found the reason for your issues.

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Yup! I helped a buddy of mine on his XS650 when he got some new carbs. Same thing happened! Glad you found your "main" issue. Hopefully that's all the trouble you will have! 8)

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Im hopin thats it if you could bruno how did you guys fix it ? I messed with last night and got them closer but not perfect as i ran out of adjustment on the cables !

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

I think there was something with the mechanism where both carb cables come in. It was dragging inside due to faulty machining work. I think it would be called the Universal 2 into 1 throttle cable or something alon those lines It was a little while back, I'll see if I can bug him. Hopefully his mind is better at remembering than mine! Also, I think someone on here (maybe PJ?) mentioned that it does matter how you've routed your throttle cable lines. Double check that.

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

That's the plan tonight is check the route of the cables ! Talked to BradJ earlier today and we where thinking the same thing ! Thanks for the help guys will let you know what happens ;D

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Spent some time on the XS mostly working on the throttle cables . Did get the carbs spot on as far as moving at the same time and height but when i would adjust the slack out of the throttle itself leavening about a 1/4 of play the carbs would jump out of sync ? Did everything from starting from the carbs and working to the throttle to going from the throttle down to the carbs !! Also took cables off to see if its something with it but all seemed fine . Both cables are the same length and move smoothly but seems once its all together and tighten down its off a lil just cant seem to get it working altogether but will figure it out sooner or later ! Only other thing i can think of is the throttle houseing is off or the wrong one so next plan is to switch to a diff one i have and see if thats it !!!!

Also havent had much time do to the fact of this lil critter in my shop :

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

AH! You just kickstarted my brain again! I remember something about OVER TIGHTENING a point and that caused it to bind/have issues. He couldn't remember either, so we are out of luck there :-\

I think your course of action sounds about right though, it never hurts to have extras of the things you are ordering too :)

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Spent more time on the carb and throttle problem and think i got it fixed ;D After racking my brain i pulled the n cable apart it seems one is just a hair longer then the other so fixed that and everthing seems good to go . Still has lil more play in it then i like but both carbs are nice and even so will see.
Next im putting lil money away ever day with out the wife knowing ( SHHHHH ) to save up for SS brake lines . Have everthing set to finish this monkey on my back and move on to next the LS !
