Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Cool I have the stock ones that are all cracked and the new ones I have are NOS ones so it might come down to the seal ! Now if I can just get out of work I could find out lol

Thanks for the help guys

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Yep. To get the CX to run after valves and carb cleaning, I didn't have the o-rings yet so I put RTV Gasket in the ring hole proud of the maifold about what the o-ring was on the good one, let it cure, then tightened it down, did the test fire and it ran great, but that stuff is not fuel stable so when I stripped it down I cleaned it all off again and got a set of o-rings off ebay to replace. you could do the same to test, but don't leave it there, just get o-rings.

http://www.mcmaster.com/#o-rings/=mnelfg measure and order . I'm sure you can find plenty of other stuff to make up an order .

Pulled both carbs off and cleaned them then back on . I checked to make sure I have spark which both did but still only right side firing . Pulled plugs and left side clean but with I'll gas on it and right was black .
Could this be air around the boots maybe or something else . Read a few threads here and seems its a carb problem someplace ?
Well back to reading ! Any thoughts guys ????

I had the same problem with mine earlier today, didnt check my plugs though.

On mine it was pretty obvious as i have clear fuel lines on it, the right side wasnt getting any/enough fuel.

(because i used a small container for a tank and it didnt deliver enough fuel)

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Messed around with the XS carbs tonight and figured a few things out . I went up one size on the pilot jet which help with it running with choke off :) But still not firing on left side so looked at the boots . Found my stock ones that are cracked but on the out side so would work for the moment . Well carbs didnt fit so well so took new ones was the same , carbs wouldn't seat far enough to get good seal so took a small amount off inside lip and got it to sit a lot better.
Well same thing only running on one cylinder ? So next I switched spark plug wires and coil wires to see if it would move cylinders . Well it didn't same thing right side running and hot ,left side cold ??? So next I'll recheck the compression and see if not that pull valve cover off and check valve !
At this moment I'm I'll lost  :-[

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Question : if the compression is right could I've adjusted the left intake valve to tight to open and not let fuel in ?

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Too tight would make the valve hang open slightly, so you'd have very little vacuum or compression on that cylinder. Too loose and you'd have noisy valves and less flow, cuz the valve wouldn't open as much. I'm thinking you were on the right track looking at the carbs and rubbers. With the Mikunis, I had to ditch the metal outer covers on the carb boots and use the old-fashioned worm-and-screw radiator hose clamps, or else the boots wouldn't seal for me. I imagine you'd have the same issue. If you can move (rotate) the carbs, the clamps aren't tight enough.

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

So after bleeding the clutch on my other bike I moved on to the XS to look at a few things . Found out two things one I have good compression and two have spark ! So ill look else where like valve adjustment and wiring ! I will get this but will take time as I'm just trying to rule out one thing at a time ! Every time I mess with something befor I move on I see if what I messed with work or not !! Time will tell I guess LOL

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Keep at it Dread. You will be carving the back roads with her before long

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Spent about 2 hours or so on the phone with Kopcicle which was a learning Experience! If this man ever offers to help take it ;D Well not sure if we found the true problem but we did Eliminate a few things and think maybe it was me messing with the wiring for the The Ignition just maybe ! Getting ready for the Thaw this week so will get back at it when I get back !

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

MMMMM well I was messing around on the bike last night to see if I could run down the problem . Sat down and read thru the testing instuctions to see if I missed something . Tested the ignition and seemed like the eye for the left cylinder wasn't coming on . So then moved to the ignition box and tested it . After following the instructions to test the Box it pointed me back to the left eye on the ignition plate  So I believe its the eye that is bad because the wiring is good ,box is good , that eye will not trigger just dead !! I even switched right to left ,left to right and left eye still would not work :'(
So my plan is to first email Newtronic about it and see if they will replace it ( ive had it over a year ) so not counting on that . Then see how much it will cost to just replace it with a new one . If the price is out of hand ill see if I can find someone to replace both eyes as there just senser eyes nothing special about them ? And then if that don't work ill say Fuck it and go to stock points and call it a day !!!!

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Hell yeah! Sounds like you've sussed out the problem!

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Hopefully they'll stand behind... at least a little. I've had a newtronics on my 650 for over 11 years now- never a hitch. And if my 650 can't shake it to death, that says something for the design.

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

ONLY if you take Brad because there in London LOL

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Email sent to Newtronics will see what comes of it !

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Just got a email back from Newtronic and there asking for me to send them the senser back with the plate ! And if its bad they will replace and send it back ! WOOT
There asking me to send it thru : Royal mail Recorded Delivery ? I take it its like UPS and wonder if UPS will work ??? Will have to look into it ASAP lol

Wish me luck because I really don't want to send Mike and Brad over there to fix the problem cuz they will burn the place down LOL

Burn Everything but there coal

Re: Out in a field Build ... XS 500 The Sock Monkey

Ha Scott, Royal mail recorded delivery is USPS registered mail. Signature required for delivery. We still call Canada Post - Royal Mail when we need to use it to send something here. Good luck, UPS will bend you over to send that too, Check USPS first.
