Over Charging? Please advise

Hey guys,

I got my cafe project on the road with a lot of help from you guys, and after a few short runs on her, i was experiencing some battery issues. I'm running a Ballistic EVO2 4 Cell battery with a Kohler R/R (2575503S 4140305 4140309) on a '75 CL360.

My first Ballistic battery quit on me and I was unable to kickstart the bike after i stalled her out going up the hill to my house. Assuming it was defective, I have since returned said battery for a warranty, and shortly after received a new one (despite some reviews, Ballistic customer service was awesome).

I just did a voltage test on on the bike with the new battery. Charges ~13-13.5v at idle and jumped up to 14-14.8v when revving with some very short jumps to just over 15v. My concern is that the R/R isn't capping the charge safely, and it cooked my first battery.

Is this normal behavior for the Kohler R/R? Am I gonna destroy my new battery? If so, could somebody point me in the direction for a reliable R/R?

Kohler is a good cheap option for a replacement on a stock battery system, but usually won't cut it for LI-ION.

We have one that will suit your needs. $25 via paypal to sales@sparckmoto.com and I'll get one out into the mail for you. I'll wire it for the spade connectors, too.

Just received the Sparck R/R! Wired up with spade terminals as promised. This thing smells like fresh tyres. :D

Two questions: The pink and yellow wires are spliced together on my bike, does it matter which of the two I send that AC current through on the regulator?

Also, just out of curiosity, if the red wire is B+, what's the black wire for?

Thanks again.

Pink and yellow should NOT be spliced together. That's going to give you some real issues. Yellow and white are the two to splice.

Black is the voltage sensing wire, so the internal regulator knows where to keep the voltage level. On your old Kohler unit, this is an internal part.

My apologies, I meant to say yellow and white are spliced together on my bike. It had been a while since I built the harness.

Hopefully I'll get to put it together this evening and take her for a ride!

Thanks again.
