Painting an assembled engine

Been Around the Block
On my Suzuki GSX 400 that I'm rebuilding, i have taken the motor out but at the moment not going to completely take it apart.
i took off the side covers and will remove the head cover, so the covers will be easy to paint.
but my concern is how to paint the rest of the motor, to be more precise how to get it ready for painting. i find it difficult cleaning between the head fins.
any advice?

Eran, I've painted a complete motor, and I'll tell you the easiest way: get new gaskets and separate the top end from the cases. It is much easier to clean and prep everything.

As a complete motor, any media blasting is out because the media will find a way inside. So you're stuck trying to get small brushes and picks in between all the fins.....and it's a pita.

Look at my build thread. I just did this to mine. Carb cleaning style brush cleaners that almost look like heavy duty pipe cleaners, 3 cans of carb cleaner, a 3-4" stiff bristled brush, gunk brand gel engine cleaner and a few hours of cleaning and elbow grease and you should be able to get it all. Look at my pictures in my thread. My engine was really nasty when I started. Road debris, oil, and the petcock was leaking for years and probably 3000 miles so there was burnt on gas everywhere... cane out very nice in the end.

Gun cleaning brass brushs works to get between the fins. Available in many sizes (calibers). Seems to me I used a .380 or .40 cal maybe even a .410 shotty brush. You can pick up a whole gun cleaning kit that has a selection of brush sizes and a handle for cheap and Wal-Mart or the like.

Baking Soda blast with covers on. make caps for intake and exhaust. did it a lot of times, never had a problem.
paint covers afterwards.
Baking soda dissolves in water/oil and does no harm to engine. When finished, run engine for hour and replace oil. (Like you always do after a rebuild, but a little earlier.)

If you do not want or can not go that route, its elbow grease and bloody knuckles for you mate..
A lot of sodablasting DIY shit on YT.

thats what i thought about soda blasting? completely safe and will just dissolve if it does get into the motor, anyone know for sure as im about to my motor

Soda blasting is my pick. Have done it heaps on old engines and not had an issue! Takes a while but less time than pulling the motor down if it doesn't need it.

Just to play devil's advocate.. what about all the grit, grime, and paint that you are blasting off?
Where do you suppose it goes?
