Painting rims

Anybody paint their rims? Mine were pretty rusty but when I wire wheeled them the don't look so bad any more but I know the rust will just come back. To paint them do you have to remove the chrome or just make sure they are clean?

i had a nightmarish time with drips and getting a level coat.
so much so, i said fuggit and got them powdercoated.
disappointingly, the PC has orange peel in parts.

god damn large round bits.

well hit us up next time man... our shits like glass brother!

I painted mine with appliance epoxy. Look at JRK's mod. I cleaned them up, scuffed them, and painted them. No need for primer with the appliance epoxy. It worked well and it's very easy to touch up.

They are dusty in this picture, but the turned out great:

I'm doing the epoxy now. It actually recomends not to use primer!
I will say that the stuff is hella sticky while drying, so a booth or curtain is a must. Don't ask how I know...

what about the utter lack of UV resistance in the appliance epoxy? that (and the limited range of colours) is what put me off ultimately.
i used a ridiculously hard clear coat. then i let it sit for a week (doh).

i have never had a problem with the black in the sun, ever, and have painted complete bikes with it in college that sat in the sun 42-7. the white does dull down in the sun though that one i have noticed a problem with UV, but never on the silver, black, or cream.

if you want to use colors other than those, i sugest powder, nothing else will hold up *i know a powder coater ;)

I would suggest using a self etching primer. The stuff will stick to chrome, old paint, polished alloy, just about anything. You can get it in a rattle can from Sherwin-Williams or an auto body supply house. Then use any color of auto touch up paint you like. I think that a paint ment to be exposed to the elements is the way to go.
