Painting with Epoxy spray paint

Been Around the Block
I purchased about 6 cans of VHT Epoxy roll bar paint to paint two bike frames and some other items like my fork lowers and triple tree. my million dollar question is do I need to use a primer before I apply the Epoxy Roll bar and chassis paint? how would durability and adhesion compare if I used a primer ? i purchased Zinc Chromate( for aluminum ) and Self etching primer just in case but I am not entirely sure how to go about this.

thanks!

I have used this product before and primer isn't required, just a very clean surface and the proper dry time or an oven at low temps.

I agree with Kamn. I have never used a primer. It bonds well, dries fast and is durable. That's all I use now if I'm painting black.

I have never baked in an oven, just dried overnight with no issues. It's a pretty flexible coating and can give a bit without cracking.

I also agree the epoxy sticks like glue on bare steel. Have not used it on aluminum.

how will the epoxy stick to the fork lowers which i believe are aluminum? should I prime it?
also do i really need to strip the original paint off my old frame before applying this epoxy, its alot of work? will it affect durability and adhesion?

thank you guys!

Bare aluminum I would hit with etching primer first, paint tends to have difficulty sticking to bare aluminum unless it has a catalyst. Let the etch primer dry fully (usually about 2 hours) and then give it a quick scuff with a Scotch-Brite pad and hit it the epoxy paint like normal.
