Been Around the Block
I'm wondering if anyone has put a pass button on any of their older bikes? i saw it on my buddy's gsxr and thought it was a pretty cool feature to have.

Not I, but it shouldn't be hard to add to an older bike. Microswitch from Radio Shack would do it ;)

what is a pass button?

My friends gsxr has a button that says pass, its basically just a button that rapidly switches your headlight from normal to bright as long as you hold it. The idea is for you to press it rapidly so your headlight flickers, making you more visible as you pass other cars. very useful in new mexico as nobody looks before they merge...

Holy fuck that is a really really really bad fucking idea. I'm a truck driver (5-axle flatdeck trailer, 98,000lbs capacity) and when someone in the hammer lane flashes their headlight at me, it means "its cool, move over". So if I'm cruising down the 401 and come upon someone doing 90kph I'll be looking in my mirror seeing if I can move over and pass. If you come up on me right then and start flashing your lights at me I'll think "right on, nice guy" move over and potentially kill you. This is more serious at night because its really hard to tell if someone iis behind or beside my trailer, hence the light flashy signal thing. Please do not do this. I cannot stress this enough. If I'm fully loaded, I wouldnt even feel you going under my trailer, and wouldnt know about it until the cops pulled me over and charged me with vehicular manslaughter.

Only flash your lights to signal that its safe to move over, never to draw attention to yourself. Some people turn on their highbeams while passing a truck and that only serve to temporarily blind me cus the highbeam goes directly into my big mirror and into my eyes.

Again, do not do this. Please.

yuuup.

thats what I know it to mean in new jersey too. flick the highs a couple times means "youre good, fucking go already!" we're a polite bunch, what can i say. only thing that would make me stop and think for a second would be if he kept flashing it. then I'd be thinking "wtf is this guy doing?" by that time, i might already be in his lane though.

I think the best use for it would be to control the application of that bottle of throttle. then the "Pass" button would really make you pass someone ;D

Incorrect use of the feature. The original intent for the "Flash to Pass" is when you encounter a slower moving vehicle, generally in the left (passing) lane, you flash your brights to alert them that you are approaching and that they should "yield to faster traffic" and move to the right.
I too drive a tractor/trailer and ProSimex is correct, if you flash your brights on an open lane as you suggested, you're very likely to end up a greasy spot on the highway.
I also hear riders suggesting that you flash your brights at cagers who are exiting driveways/parking lots/etc. to "alert them of your presence". This is also bad/dangerous information for the same reason Pro described.

Factory feature on BMW's. My 1975 R75/6 has it built into the hi-beam switch. You flick up to turn them on, or press down to temporarily flash them. Very handy if you're riding somewhere that people actually understand the rules of the road and how you're supposed to drive. Like in Germany. North Americans are among the worst drivers on the planet. I'd rather the anarchy of China or India or other sources of wonderful YouTube vids than driving with a bunch of McDonalds swilling cigarette smoking child spanking Sirius satellite radio tuning cell phone yakking makeup applying idiots who think they're following the rules but clearly don't understand them.

More often than not the right lanes are the fastest on the 401 (North America's busiest highway if I'm not mistaken) because everyone is trolling along in the middle/left lanes for no good reason.

I use my flasher and my Stebel horn on the BMW to wake them the fuck up.

It's a feature on bikes in Europe where it means, I'm coming through, so get out of the way.

Truth.

In Illinois, flashing your brights means either "SLow your ass down, I just passed a cop back there" or "Turn your fucking brights off, you're blinding me".

means the same thing here. Ideally such a feature WOULD be used to say, "hey buddy you slow in the fast lane, move over please" but people take it as being very rude when you do that.

just dont do it next to a transport thats trying to merge over into your lane.

I always understood flashing headlights to mean move into the right lane to let faster traffic pass. I do it here in Canada and most of the people either brake check me ( I NEVER follow too close because of this) or do nothing but drive alongside the car in the right lane. WTF people?

I'm considering one of these 170db bad boys for my truck! lol

Well he just said hes in Canada....

I imagine they're legal here, they sell train horns at Princess auto.

or you can use it to trigger the bottle of nitros under the seat 8)

The first bike I bought with the "flash to pass" switch was just a big waste of a switch in my book. I rewired it for a nitrous purge solenoid. "Flash to purge"! Ha! Much better!
