Picked this one up today

Been Around the Block
Went to St. Mary's, Ga. today and picked up this one for a new project. A 78 yamaha SR500E, all maintaince up to date with reciepts from Yamaha dealer, new battery, new tires, and new brake pads with flushed calipers. Navy guy bought it last March from his brother in law who inherited the bike from his father, he's replaced it with a harley soft tail. I paid $900 and was happy to do so!!! Gotta get rid of the shorty exhuast and put on a BSA Goldstar or maybe a Dunstall replica, will eventually replace mags with spokes. Anybody got a set to trade or sell?? Maybe just the spoke hubs??

Here's a couple of pics of the "inspiration" bikes I'm thinking of!

Lookin' good and a great deal. These motorcycles will become harder to find at a good price, especially in running condition. I am seeking a 400 to 650 cc for my wife. Keep the pictures coming as you make those changes.

Awesome deal - one of my next project bike targets (unless I stumble across a nice small Ducati single first!).

a guy i know had an sr500 in the 90's. fairing, one up seat, dual disc front, clubman's, the works. it was a hot vintage racer style machine. i looked hard for an sr500 before i found my cb550. something about having a single cylinder is appealing. great score.

Nice bike, looks to be in great shape.
I would keep the mags though, spokes ain't all they are cracked up to be. I'd maybe use them if they already came on a bike and they do LOOK better than most mag set ups,but looks just isn't a good enough reason in the big picture.

Most people replace spokes with mags, not the other way around. You could still build it to resemble a70's era racer as a lot of those had mag wheels.

You could still "Speed Hole" the mag spoke to get that Airy lightened look. I seen that done to a few RDs over on the USA 2stokers RD/LC site. http://www.usa2strokers.com/forum/default.asp
