All trying to get my ranchero ready for a photoshoot that never happened because hot girls are incredibly flaky

Thanks pawn, it's not difficult. I've only been playing with it a short while. I use Mack brushes, 1shot paints, turpentine or terpenoid to thin and clean, and dip my brushes in motor oil when not being used. I still haven't figured out how to keep my paints fresh, seems they always dry out on the surface by the next time I want to use them, then I have to break through the dry layer which puts chunks in the paint. The hardest thing for me is composition.

nice!, thanks for the tips. I imagine you are using a plate or just a piece of slick cardboard to stretch your paint on right? If so, you might prefer the plate and use a piece of seran wrap to cover the paint when youre not mixing.

I use the center pages of staple bound magazines

or if I'm lucky, my wifes halloween costume catalogs:

Store the cans upside down? That's so simple and so brilliant! I'm going to turn them all over as soon as I get home.

oh, for some reason I thought you meant like between stripes, and not between jobs. So if in the can it dries, it's just air in the can...like food and paint often people will push wax paper or seran wrap down in the can so the liquid doesn't have contact (or much that is) with air. You don't have to store them upside down that way and have an accident one of these days.

When I saw sculpture I thought this threads for me, I do some sculpting too but the stuff I make is monsters and Halloween stuff. really nice job on that pin striping!

thats one art i have to learn! whats a good striping starter setup run you?

So I have been trying to learn to pinstripe as well. The consistancy is hard for me. I have a lot of work to do with it before it will be bike worthy and it is deffinately not as good as you see above but here are my first two designs I did.

Like I said I have a long way to go but it is a start.

As far as a good starter setup, a brush will run about $10-15, although on ebay I have seen them for a bit less. a small can of 1 shot is about $6-10 depending on color. Some thinner another couple bucks. It is not that bad, I would recommend getting a couple different brushes. I have a OO blue mack and a scrolling Kafka and some joey fink brushes (my wife got them for me knowing absolutely nothing about pinstriping, I do not recommend them). The Kafka is a lot easier for me, the mack is harder. Everyone is different, but I would try a couple different brushes.

Hopefully my work will improve and I will be able to post some better looking stuff.

Bitchin, I like your' compositions, and with that skill down the cleanliness and smoothness will just come with practice. There are a few tricks to getting everything symmetric, if I'm real worried about it I'll lay tracing paper over the first side, trace over the lines in chalk flip the tracing paper over, and pat it down so that the lines transfer to the other side. Otherwise I'll often take some key measurements and lightly draw the second side in chalk using the measurements, then go over with paint. Also it's important to always be looking where you want the line to go (at the end) not at where the brush is right now... that will help you get smoother lines that end up where you wanted them to.

I stripped and striped the roof this weekend for the GoodGuys show:

Next up is the dash.

Here are some more practicing, still a long way to go.

This one is my first attempt at scrolling, the image is not mine and the motions are not fluid but I think it turned out pretty good.

Not bad at all!!..

I do agree, I find the Mack swords amazing for long straight lines, horizontal and verticle, push and pull lines...
I just find it very difficult to use for the c-lines, horizontal and verticle & push and pull lines... For those lines, Im finding that the Kafka brushes are the best. Especially, for scrolling and flame designs...

At the moment, Im doing the 10,000 line method.
10 basic line types.. and the idea is that you have to do each of the basic lines 1000 times each before your hand/muscle control and brush holding technique becomes consistent wtih every line.
So Ive been trying to hit 100 each day for each line type...
1. horizontal straight line & verticle straight line
2. horizontal c-curve line & verticle c-curve line
3. horizontal backwards c-curve & horizontal backwards c-curve
4. horizontal s-curve line & verticle s-curve line
5. horizontal backwards s-curve & verticle basckward s-curve line.

It is truly boring and very unsexy practice work and after 1000 brush stokes, pallating, adding paint then reducer... you hand starts to hurt...

Ive been practicing on clear transparencys. I"ll even use a transparency to palate the brushes between each strokes:

Everyday, Im getting more consistent in my lines... I still dont believe that Im ready to put any lines on anything yet... but eventually I will..
At this point Im just laying lines down and when the transparency sheet gets filled up, then I just wipe it clear with varsol and start again:

just fooling around with the Kafka #3 brush:

just quickly tried a free hand design:

this art is truly about practice.. practive..and more practice...

great start guys, I'v been practicing for over a year now and paint very chance I get. I really got into Lettering as well.
I use a piece of glass for practice and the transparency when I have them, the glass is easy to clean with a razer blade.

I just got a Mack 000 and find its a lot better in the turns and I can still lay thick lines with it.

here is one I did for a friends b-day and the other is the garbage can in my garage.
