Plastidip wheels?

Cloyd

If it feels good....do it....
Anyone ever tried this. I've seen a few done but I just wanted to see what y'all thought about using plastidip on wheels. Looks like powder and is almost as durable.

I've tried it... it's okay, the finish smooths it's self out pretty well but it's not super durable. If you mask stuff off make sure to remove the tape/paper before the plastidip dries because it'll pull up the edges and it's hard to stop the peeling. If you really wanna do it, lay it on thick and then try not to hit it with anything sharp. It'll absorb some hits but it can be cut.

Btw, make sure you clean the nozzle out with paint stripper before attempting to spray with an old can. I did a fork leg and then went back later that day to do a quick touch up, the plastidip dried some in the nozzle and it shot clumps out all over the place. I ended up having to strip the entire thing and do it over again.

Doesn't look close to powder coat and isn't even close to as durable. It's undercoating for your wheels. For a protective coating it is okay , for a durable cosmetic coating it is seriously lacking. If it were as durable and looked like PC for the money, I am many other powder coaters would end up out of business. I don't think I'm going anywhere anytime soon.

I'd say its good to see if you'd like the way your stuff looks in flat black. It's like the temporary hair dye you use at Halloween.

Plastidip comes in bright yellow, blue, and red too....Not that I would coat my wheels. I have coated my pliers handles and screw driver shafts though...great stuff for tools.

Plastidipped red wheels.
It's ok I guess. Definitely will not last forever but it gives you an excellent idea of how your bike would en up looking without actually needing to do any permanent stuff. I do like it though! The idea of changing my wheel color every season on the cheap is excellent in my books.

I don't know how you would shoe horn the tires on without damaging it (or off, for a flat for instance).

I think you'd apply this on built wheels with rubber on. Would be a step up from the masking off of tires and spray-bombing some folks do. At least you could trim and peel each spoke nipple to have a decent finish.

You have to do this with the tires on and after the dip dries you "simply" peel it off.

You have anymore pics of them? some close ups and other shots? I am thinking about doing this to test out what colors I will do my powder coating in. Thanks

Here's a close up pic, it's been collecting dust during my rebuild.
