Pod Filters?

scotch

Who put coffee in my morning Baileys?
So there seem to be 3 different kinds of pod filters from what i have seen:

Paper (K&N)

Foam (Uni)

and Metal/Mesh (Emgo)

Just wondering who has used which and what their experiences have been?

I'm looking to run the pods on a cb500/4 with stock carbs, so I understand the bike won't run as well as it did with the stock airbox.

I got the emgos, but I am also broke and would prefer the K&N, I use the K&N oil and cleaner on my Emgos though. I have it from my autos.

Well I've got the Uni's and like them. When the carb float got stuck and I had all that gas coming through the filters I'm glad it was foam..

I thought K&N were made from cotton or something? Doesn't matter.....

While I prefer K&N filters, UNI's are much easier to fit and install since they are basically a big spring wrapped in foam.

Honestly Rich, I think it depends on the specific application. Some are foam, some are cotton (or whatever it is), and so on.

I like the uni sock style filters. Easier to tune than the K&N's, but if youre going for looks, they dont look as cool... Uni makes decent stuff though, i bought their sheets of cut-your-own filters to replace the 30 year old foam on my 125. Works perfectly as an OEM replacement.

I like the way the UNI's look. As mentioned before, the UNI's are pretty easy to get on and off. Couple pics of them mounted up..

My EMGOS are sitting quietly over there in the trash where they belong. K&N there is no other.

Emgos interfere with both the frame and the choke lever on CB500/CB550's, requiring much cutting and modifying of the pods to make them work.. If I didn't have a project bike with absolutely no air filters/airbox, I wouldn't have bothered with Emgos...

The K&N filters are cotton.

Most people clean them too frequently. K&N recommends cleaning them every 50,000 miles! The accumulated dirt on the element actually acts as filter media, and makes them more effective at filtering.

People often over-oil them, too, but the biggest mistake people make with K&N filters is blowing them out with compressed air. That RUINS the cotton filter media. The best way to clean them is to wash them with hot soapy water. (like with dishwashing liquid.) I clean mine by rinsing them out in my parts washer, (which is filled with kerosene,) or with mineral spirits. Then I use Simple Green and wash them out with hot water.

Don't mean to bump an old thread but does anyone know the correct part number for the K&N pods that fit and don't require any modification?

So, there's one model of K&N pod that fits and doesn't require modification, and the rest of their filters are just red herrings?

(Seriously, dude, for what bike? You'll need to get the measurement of your carb, look at the clearances in your frame, and choose a filter out of K&N's "universal" clamp-ons to suit your need There's a full list of what they make on the website, with measurements, descriptions, and even pictures...)

K&N is not paper. Its a cleanable and reusable foam. Use the K&N.

K&N is cotton
They make direct replacement filters for a lot of bikes, you have to use stock airbox (and you usually have to re-jet as bike runs lean)
There is no such thing as a direct replacement pod that doesn't require some serious carb work

side question, pod filters cause tuning issues on most bikes right?. Midrange problems? I know racers use em but they are seldom riding in heavy traffic so...doesnt matter. I like the look of pod filters and will be using the cool red UNIS
My question is has anyone ever made an adaptor that would tie all three carbs air supply together (like an airbox)between the filters and the carbs? Like a runner for an intake manifold (remember im coming from cars, my first foray into bikes) I would think the carbs would react just like an airbox but I could still have the "racer" look I want for this bike right?
