Hey guys/gals

I'm sure this has been written about to death so if someone can direct me to the link(s) or offer advice that would be great.

Problem - I have changed out the air box and added pods to my CB550. Now the bike runs like s%@t. can anyone recommend a jet kit and the settings to correct this?

Thanks in advance

yeah... are you running stock exhaust/mufflers?
Does it runn better if you have the choke partially on?..(Pods give it too much air and not enough fuel)
If so, you are going to have to jet up. By how much, who knows.. you are going to have to try and test a few sizes to see what works best wtih your bike set-up...

Perssonally , for that exact reason I dont like pods...

It is the original 4 into 4 exhaust but the fella who had the bike before me decided to slash cut the ends and re baffle them. They look and sound alright on a brat but the bike runs crap. I'm gonna keep the air box on the Cafe to avoid this problem. I'm not a mechanic or anything like that so i'm just learning as i go. Thanks for the help.

Don't know how much this will help because my only jetting experience is on different type of carbs, but here goes...

On my kz650 when I changed from airbox and stock 4-2 exhaust to pods with same exhaust I had to increase jets by one step on the pilot and 4 steps on the main (stock 102.5 main, 15 pilot to 112.5 main, 17.5 pilot). After changing the exhaust I had to increase another 2 main jet sizes to 17.5 pilot and 117.5 main, also had to reclip the needle jet to raise the needle by one step.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know a damn thing about the stock honda carbs on your 550, but would start by increasing pilot jets by one size, adjust the needle jet (if it has one) to make that circuit more rich also, and start with 3 sizes larger mains, but I'd have the next size bigger than those on had too should the bike want more gas.

!977 Honda CB550K with 4 - 4 exhaust cut and re baffled (not my doing) and air pods (not the good K&N but the cheapo's)

So after reading the service manuals and pulling the carbs off, it turns out that the carbs on the 77 are not shown as in the manual. Must have changed from 76 to 77. This was also discovered after buying the push in main jets that should have worked on the carbs years previous but are screw in for the 77. So i just went down 1 on the needle and put back together. It starts no probs, revs really high with the choke all the way out, idles fine when warmed up and seems to run much better. However it seems that it loses some gusto in the higher RPM range and the #1 cylinder is back firing a little or popping. (sorry i'm not very technical and don't really know what i'm doing or talking about). The next set is going to be to go up to a 110 main jet from the stock 90 and goo from there.

Any further idea's would be welcomed.

Thanks mate, i will have a search for that. I the meantime. i replaced the main jets up to 115 and it runs a lot better. Now if the weather would only get better i could take it for longer then a quick lap up and down the street.

Well after a few test runs it still wasn't right. I was at my wit's end pulling off the carb's and trying new set up's. In the end i took off the exhaust that the previous owner butchered and replaced the Mac 4 into 1. Result. Bike runs a treat. Thanks for the help.
