Ponycarman's '80 cm400t

Been doing as much as I can on the weekends. Got a replacement lower steering stem and tapered steering bearings. Haven't installed them yet. In the disassembly and rust removal phase haha. Naval jelly has been working great to get the rust gone. The original stem had one of the stops broken off. I believe the previous owner had a front impact. Forks appear undamaged but I'll will check them better when disassembled.

Snapped a pic or two with my ugly self made seat cover on haha. It's pretty comfy. Gonna use it for a while then have a better one made I think.

Last weekend I modified a gm coil for the coil swap. And did some more cleaning. Been starting to learn to ride on my buddies honda grom. I'm still very new but I'm having a blast!

Got a ton done today. Probably the most progress yet. Got the rest fender cleaned and de-rusted. Sealed up the underside with rubberized undercoat. Mounted it and the rear signals and tail light. Took the whole front end apart and got the new steering head bearings in, rebuilt the forks, and filled them with the right amount of 10wt fork oil. It's getting there haha. The front suspension feels a ton better now. Doesn't seem to sag as much and much smoother.

Got this in the mail today!

Braided stainless brake line with fittings, bolts, and crush washers. I believe this will complete my brakes systems for now.

Had some questions about fork braces and steering dampers. I've seen some peeps use tarrozi fork braces. When I look on fast from the past the only listing for cm bikes says 1983. Is this the right brace? I wasn't aware they made an 83 cm400. I know the fender is also the fork brace on these bikes but would like to add some additional stability eventually. Steering damper? Is it something worth adding in the future? Just getting some ideas for the future of where I'm going to take the project.

Thanks!

Got some better pics and got a little done.

I'm in the process of stripping the black paint off the forks and front fender and polishing them back to nice.

Pic from the rear

Got the bars remounted last weekend with the rubber dampers shimmed to tighten the bar mounts up a tad. It's really coming along. Feels nice making progress and improvements :)

Also I got some new pegs on. My buddy swapped them on. They are the passenger pegs from his honda grom of all things haha. They fit pretty well and look/feel way better. Much more solid and grippy.

Can kinda see them here. Pretty basic looking but nicer than the stock ones.

Got a good bit done last weekend. Took the forks back off and stripped the black paint off. Lightly polished the forks. Not totally shiny but better than they were. Got then put back on and started putting on the other pieces. Got the brake caliper, new line, master cylinder, new controls, and clutch lever on. Starting to look more like a bike again haha. Also wasn't satisfied with my seat mods so I grabbed another factory seat. No I can figure out what to do with the other seat and make it how I want it.

Forgive the sucky pics

I actually dig the lines of that stock seat along with what you've done to the bike. Have you thought about modifying the stock seat for a lower profile look, but keeping the lines? You may even be able to use the stock seat cover too, depending on how much foam you remove. I'm using this method on the GS550 seat, hopefully have it buttoned up this week and put some pics up.

Not totally sure where I'm gonna go with the seat honestly. The stock one is big but doesn't look horrible to me. Way more comfy and with my long legs helped to give me some more room. I have a second seat to experiment with though! Fun fun haha! Sooner or later I'll make my mind up ha.
