Prepping a parked bike for first start

Hey guys,

So I picked up a cm185t the other day. Its a 78 with about 8000 miles on it. I picked it up from the second owner, pretty interesting lady. Her dad owned an Indian dealership in the 50's and she drove an Indian and her partner drove the twinstar.

Needless to say she parked the twinstar for i'm guessing around 18 years. She said she thinks she started it about 5 years ago, but guessing by the shape of the carbs.... it probably didn't happen.

So the seat and paint are still in good shape and there is not much rust. There is some near the bottom of the frame and i need to clean the mufflers out, but nothing sat in water as it was shed stored.

The engine seems to have good compression and if i can get it up and running ill get it tested at a shop about 2 miles away.

There are a few things i need to do, but not a ton just to get it up and running i think

I bought a new carb on ebay, as the carb on there was really really bad. If i've heard correctly honda originally used shellac when they sealed carbs the first time. If my thinking is right it sat for almost 18 years and built up pretty bad, especially around the float needle. That thing is cemented in there, and i realized that it would cost me more to buy new internal parts than a new carb.

I tossed the throttle cable as it was frozen, found 1 through a dealer search so that is on the way. I'm replacing all the fuel lines and of course getting a new battery. I also ordered a new air filter as well, because when i opened the air box the old one disintegrated. I have replaced the plugs as well.

I plan on changing the oil and was thinking about hooking it up to an auxillary tank just to make sure it would start before pouring more money into tires and a chain and opening the crank case to clean the oil filter.

Is there anything that i could add to help the first new oil that has been introduced to the engine in almost 20 years? I was planning on adding a little marvel mystery oil, and i have a gasket on the way in case i decide to go ahead and pull the oil filter and clean it.

Suggestions for firing this thing up right the first time welcome!

You're pretty much on the right track. I would drain the oil first (just to make sure there's no gas / water in the sump), top it up with fresh oil and after it's been run for a little while, change it again.

It's already turning over so that's a good sign ;)
