prepping chrome rims for powdercoat

Just curious as to what I need to do, or should i let the powdercoater prep them? More cost I would assume, but then they have them the way they want em...

Let the coater do the prep unless you're just wanting to learn to do the work yourself. You'll have to ask about the cost... most estimates assume prep but you should be sure.

Yeah, don't worry about it. Your powder guy will blast them and acid dip them. Even if you do a great job prepping them yourself, he'll still have to make sure they're 100% clean right before they get powdered, so you might as well let him do everything. For chrome, the blasting roughs them up; it doesn't strip the chrome completely off. But, if they're spoked, I'd recommend completely disassembling them and then re-spoking them after they're coated. If you powder over the whole thing, you can't adjust the spokes if they need it.

What Dave said.

Wheel must be unspoked so that the powdercoater can do just the rim. The powdercoater will insist on prepping the rims. Sandblasting before coating is part of the price. Just roll with it.

right on, thanks! I was planning on disassembling it so that's ok. I just need the rim and hub powdercoated, I was going to order new spokes.

Thanks again.

Don't forget to press out the wheel bearings in the hub. Also if there are rubber bushings for your sprocket the coater may insist you press those out too. The heat generally won't damage them but they leak grease and goo something awful.

our shop presses out bearings and removes tires for customers as well as installs them and blances, more than happy to help you out. we do all the prep and can even breakdown and lace wheels if needed
