Progress - motor work - Project 73 CL175

Re: NEW - Project Little Brother 73 CL175

nice updates the forks look good can't wait till they are finish. i think it is so cal that makes us lag haha. keep it up.

small update feb13

well here is some more work i did. made some pieces to box in the stamped frame. i really like the look of the drawn holes and makes the pieces stronger. i need to blast the frame before i can weld them in.

Re: NEW - Project Little Brother 73 CL175

Wow! This one's going to be very nice indeed! I love the pieces you did for the inside of the frame rails. That's the kind of detail that will set this bike apart! The trees and thicker tubes are really going to look great too. I don't know how I missed your thread dude, but I'm going to watch this motherfucker from now on! Great work Spikes!

Re: NEW - Project Little Brother 73 CL175

Ram coin dimplier machine?

Its the attention to detail that no body will ever see that sets off the details that people do.

Re: NEW - Project Little Brother 73 CL175

Don't know how I missed this build but there's some cool work going on. I'm even diggin the front end before the final machining. Throw a bit of rake on it and a sissy bar and have a 175 chopper! Haha, seriously cool work, I wish I had access to a machine shop on the cheap, I'd love to ditch the stock front forks and tripples.

more updates

ok. so i started to weld shut the stamped frame at the rear. i also got a really good deal on some aluminum rims cuz the originals have kinks in them. and now for the pics

one side cleaned up vs original

Re: NEW - Project Little Brother 73 CL175

I'm not sure if you resolved all those motor issues, but just in case...

CB200 has taller pistons, longer conrods and a taller barrel. The head could be used if it's macnoine somewhat. but the rest is not much use on a 175.

machining the head creates more slack in the cam chain on both sides, so when the slack is adjusted out, the cam actually is rotated backwards slightly. That creates retarded cam timings which are not always bad. We adjust cam timing to make the motor do what we want and in general slightly retarding cam timing moves peak power up the rev range and advancing cam timing moves it down. So a slightly advanced timed cam should make a little more midrange and have a little less at the top end. a slightly retarded cam makes less in teh middle and more at the top - in theory.

.020" (20 thou) off will slightly raise compression and improve power throughout the range. We take a lot more than that off a race 175.

If you ever get tempted to fit a megacycle cam go for the mildest - it works best on those motors and we have the dyno tests to prove it.

teazer thank you for the input. the 200 pistons are out. i couldnt figure an easy way to get them on to the 175 conrods. im def not building a race engine. just thought since i was in there maybe i could spruce it up some. i have found a few sites for the 160/175 racing info, but all the links are dead for parts. what do you think about clutch parts? original vs upgrade? for the pistons and head my plan is to clean up the cylinders and get new rings at the least, machine the heads just so they mate perfectly, hopefully a 3 angle valve job, and some mild porting. wasnt even thinking of new cams. trying to keep costs low. parts cost money, but mahcine labor i get for an unbeatable deal(family). so any more info you have on parts and/or work will be greatly appreciated

Makes it 10 times more satisfying, doesn't it? Lookin good so far man.

Re: Progress - Project Little Brother 73 CL175

Killer work dcm. You guys with access to actual machinery for fab work are so lucky. Keep up the great work.

Re: Progress - Project Little Brother 73 CL175

my brother is the best. he gives up so much time to teach me how to use the tools to make these parts. he could make them much quicker and save every half a day, but instead he teaches me. i will say that using the mill and lathe is intimidating. big machines that i dont want to break and dont want to break me, but he just tells me what to do, answers my questions, and then walks away. so yeah, its rewarding. i cant believe how much work i still have to do. seeing all of your progress really helps me to motivate.

New Rubber Mounted -

well i finished trueing the wheels and saw the video someone posted about using a plastic bag instead of tire irons. ive never put tires on before. it took me 5 - 10 min and wasnt sure i was going to get them all of the way, but after some pushing and shoving, i prevailed. so the plastic bag works.

Re: Progress - New Rubber Mounted - Project 73 CL175

lookin good! :)
hey, that hub looks identical to the cb125s one

Re: Progress - New Rubber Mounted - Project 73 CL175

Man, glad I had a chance to see your build. This rascal is going to rock. Great job on those wheels.

Re: Progress - New Rubber Mounted - Project 73 CL175

i forget whose build i saw that used these tires, but thank you. they are michelin M62 2.75x18 front and 3.00x18 rear. got them from bike bandit. now i just have to do some touch up paint on the wheels. new tapered steering bearings next. almost a roller. thanks everyone

Re: Progress - New Rubber Mounted - Project 73 CL175

With 2.15 rims you could have gone wider on tyres without any problems (although you don't really need to with a 175)
I used 90/90 front and 110/90 rear on 2.15 rims, but, that's on a modified CB360 with close to double power of 175

Re: Progress - New Rubber Mounted - Project 73 CL175

yeah i figured it would be ok, but i like the smaller ones and saved some cash. im thinking of speed holing the rear spring retainers. through the tops of them. just for shits. will i be defying death with this grand idea?
