Hello everyone! My name is Erick. I have been a member for quite some time now and figured why not start a build thread. I recently picked up a 1974 CB360. I found it on craigslist as a non running bike and without a title. I instantly fell in love with the Honda twin and decided to go for it. I knew that this bike would make for a good winter project. I got it home and got it into the basement. (Michigan winters are too cold to work in a unheated garage.) I also have a 1982 Suzuki GS650 that is somewhat of a cafe style but I wanted this to go all out! I have decided to call this build, Project 387XJ simply because that was the last plate this bike had on it back in 1987. I recently got the bike in my name, never buy a bike without a title. After 3 visits to secretary of state and hours of waiting I finally got it in my name. But now since all is good I can proceed with the build!
It's been a while since this thing was legit!

I love the spokes shadow in this pic

Got some parts
I also have some block off plugs coming from crazypj10, that guy is awesome for making stuff like that for these bikes!
Motor shots
A couple hours with a grinder
And that is where I am currently. I still have a lot of stuff to remove but it is coming along quite nicely. Comments and criticism are appreciated and welcome!
Thanks guys!
Erick
Quick Update: Have been working on grinding all tabs that I will not be using. I'm going to try to finish that tonight. What kind of tires do you cb360 guys run?
I have been working hard on the bike over the winter break on the bike. My good friend Darin hooked me up with a custom bent rear tail section. I worked on welding that up then started the seat. Same old stuff as any other build. Here are some pics of what has been going on. Getting some parts later this week also.
That is all for now, tomorrow I will be fiberglassing.
Cheers!
Over the weekend I tried my hand at fiberglassing. That was interesting. I think it came out pretty good for my first time at it.
Shot of it with the tank, that will cover my battery pretty well.
I also started to design an upper triple tree to replace the garbage cast aluminum one.
I was looking at my valves and timing chain and noticed that the front timing chain guide had broken and falling down. I have seen the engine run like this. I will remove it so I can sleep at night.
Does anyone know if this is a crucial part or can I get away without one? I cant seem to find one.
You need a front guide, chain will saw a slot in cam chain tunnel without it, plus, there is a good chance tensioner will break
There were a couple of people experimenting with Delrin guides/tensioners but I haven't heard anything for some time.
I may have to 'invent' something overly complicated ;D
Yeah I need to find something. I did find some old posts of yours talking about the guides and chain tension. I started searching around but no luck. Maybe one will show up in the next few weeks. If you decide to get crazy and invent one I will be more than happy to be a guinea pig!

Yeah, couple of years ago I bought a box of rusty junk just to get front guide that was in there.
I've been doing some research on timing chain tensioners, lot more complicated than it looks when you have limited space.
I have an idea of what I want to make, will be a while before I can actually get some measurements and improve on Honda design.
I've always liked the idea of constant spring pressure so I'm looking at some early 70's swing arm/tensioner designs that were around to maintain constant tension (really, tension needs to increase as RPM goes up)
Mid 60's Honda S65 and S90 has probably best tensioner Honda ever made, low pressure hydraulic assist, 11,500 rpm capability (I started modifying stuff a long time ago ;D )
I haven't worked out how to get hydraulic asist but I'm working on it :
crazypj that is awesome. I'm sure you have something great in the works. As for me I have nothing, I tore into the head about 10min ago and recovered the broken chain guide. I was able to pick it out with a pair of needle nose pliers. Two pieces, the two cylinders at the top of the guide are missing, might have been washed out when I drained the oil.
I guess I will be in search of a new guide, also the chain appears that it put a nice groove into the lower block, I don't think it will be a problem but I wonder if I should replace the chain for good measures.
I paid $42.00 for a piece of Delrin,, already have some stainless steel sheet and some 6061 alloy, now I just need to be fixed so I can work on stuff
Your the only one who can decide about chain.
Get a flat plate under it, push about 5~6 links together then pull them apart.
If you can see movement in side plates, it's scrap.
You also need to fish chain out ad put some sort of roller through it (around 1" diameter, don't use wood)
Piece of plastic pipe works OK.
Turn motor over with kickstart and see if there are any kinks in chain (thats the reason for using something smaller diameter than crank sprocket)
Any kinks or 'jumping' it's scrap.
Then you go around again and look for burrs on plates
If everything looks OK,your good to go. (Or, for about $45.00 you can get a heavy duty CB750 cam chain from Z1 and cut i down to fit 360)
Over the weekend I picked up another CB360 bike for parts. No title so it is just a parts bike. On my way back I stopped at a building that had a Cafe style bike in the window of the shop. They invited me in and I got the name of a place that they buy parts from. Turns out the place they gave me has everything! Even the chain slider I was looking for! So I will be buying both sides NOS.
Hey Crazypj, could you elaborate on the 750 cam chain? Will any chain from a 750 work or will I need a specific model year? I went on Z1 to look at them but they were much more expensive than what you said.
Any CB750 SOHC.
It's too long so needs shortening for CB360
You need roller chain, but the parallel side plate one.
This is on page 1 I'll look through for correct one http://www.z1enterprises.com/Cam-Chain--EK-219H-128-link-1721.aspx
The DOHC (1979>) used a Hy-Vo chain which is much more expensive
Hmmm
can't find it in Honda, I'll see if I can find receipt for part number
I found a link on SOHC4, it is the right one, get rivet link to go with it and chop down to size (grind pins off on side plate)
It also fits Suzuki GSX
I decided to work on the project for a little bit. I got the clutch cover back on and started working on the timing. I removed the valve cover on the parts bike and to my surprise...... the front timing chain slider is also broke. I have spent the majority of my afternoon searching the internet for one.
I have decided that I will make one out of Delrin, my friend has some that he set aside for me. I figure I will try to reproduce the stock profile the best I can but make it sit flush against the cylinder wall. I am out of options right now. I will keep looking for one but I will give this a shot.
Somedays I with this engine was a 350. Or that Honda made a better tensioner.
I also need to work on my battery mount and get the frame coated.
Does anyone know of the CB360 model having two different timing advancer styles? The one on my bike looks different than the the one on my parts bike. I will have to post a picture of them when I get home.
