I’ve been mucking around with the gearbox and brake lever. Some heat, bending and shaping for the gearbox lever. Cut the foot brake lever and welded some repurposed steel which needs trimming. Both need paint
So I’ve hit a little snag. The linkage is some stainless tube I had laying around with some m8x1.25 threaded eye bolt turnbuckle things. The theory was to tap into the tube, put the thread in when cut to length, add some nuts for adjustability, bolt up and boom done. Yeah nah no good! The I.D is a bees dick too big for the thread but it sorta works. Photos next
So you see how the tap has not cut a deep thread. This bothers me because hey I come in hot to a corner and need that second brake so I don’t eat the closest tree and the back linkage fails by slipping some threads. Not good.
So keep in mind I want to do as much of this project myself and also keep it as cheap as practically possible.
If that made sense, can someone give a couple pointers please. Cheers
I’ve got a couple ideas like threadlock or even solder but I’m not convinced. Plus I lose that adjustment if I ever need it. Do I need adjustment if it’s set right from the start?
Although a back brake doesn't get a lot of use, it's really useful in the wet. That rod will be in compression, so the heim joints will tend to be pushed into the tube rather than pulled out, so solutions are easier.
Just get 2 nuts and silver solder them to the ends of the tube. That way, the force will be taken but the nut and the joints cannot be pushed into the tube.
I’ll try welding on some m8 nuts. I really need to get some argon to tig weld it which would be best. Silver solder can get messy but I can try that first and see how well I can get it to be neat
I might have jumped the gun. I tapped in a lot further and it seems really solid. Once I have set the location properly I’ll silver solder the ends so it will never move. The lever needs to be lowered to suit the foot position but I think I’ve got the rod at the right length. Will move the front lever around on the spindle to get it right. Working on the brake side next
Prepping some wires. Need some bootlace crimps as the terminal strip is way too big for the cable cores. Will get the crimps soon. Pretty keen to knock this wiring off so I can start thinking about getting the old girl running. Also got a shit load of oil under the sump. I need to check that before I start it up
Back working on the bike and fuck me I should have payed attention at school. Who would have thought that comprehension would have been useful in life. Well case in point just here.
Does anyone see why I couldn’t set the tappits? Don’t drink and engine build is all I can say
Valve chain is 90 degrees out. That was the issue. Headlight wires will change a bit now. I’ve got a moto gadget to wire up. Mounted the start relay, m-unit and circuit breaker for extra safety
