Project "Hurst" - '82 GL500 - Almost Road Worthy

Re: GL500-Hurst Edition

Well, I finally did something productive for this project. I finally found a metallic gold spray bomb today, and my new grips came in.

Decided that I will just do the gold now and add the white later one. Got some ideas for my seat too, going to keep the original front seat (Originally had a two part seat, front and rear) and build a cowl out of fiberglass to go where the rear seat would be.

I now need to decide on the accent color to paint some small pieces (fork lowers, rear drum, etc...). I'm stuck between the same metallic gold or a gloss black, any input appreciated!

A little off topic but got a nice early graduation present from my boss, its a 12V Makita Cordless Impact and Drill Combo plus an Irwin bit set! Hopefully can put those to use in the next week.

Hey, you interested in selling that lower fairing?

How about the complete fairing? It's just taking up space, sent me a PM and we can work something out.

Today I made actually progress! My foot has gotten better to the point where I can walk around on without any pain, I started making some head wind. First off, I've had enough of looking at this thing everyday half tore apart, so once again I changed my mind and I'm giving it the "quickie" cafe treatment.

Thus, superbike bars with some bar end mirrors (only one on at the moment):

Mocked up the itty bitty Yamaha headlight (which I still cant get disassembled!), I'm pretty sure I'm going to need something bigger, I mean look at all those wires!!! I like the 6 1/4 from DCC, anybody know of a good 7 inch headlight for under $80?

And heres a sideshot of the current progress:

Should the mufflers and heat shields stay chrome or throw some black on them?

I also got an idea of whats being trimmed from the fender:

Still lots to do!
Fork Seals
Mount new tires
Replace Wheel bearings
Kreem the Tank
PAINT!!
Rebuild carbs
New turn signals

Thats the major stuff, sure I missed something though.

Once I get the wheel bearings in the CX (hopefully come in monday or tuesday), I'll pull the forks off and do the seals, paint the lowers and top half of the tubes. I have my senior prom this saturday so don't expect much until next week!

Cycle-X has a couple choices for $69.95.... I am partial to their "Bobber Style" one that comes in either chrome or black. They also have one that is closer to the OEM Honda 7 incher that is what I got for my GL. Only see that one in black listed now but when I bougt mine they had it in chrome too. Both styles come with an H4 bulb. Worth a call, Kens a good guy.

If you want a '70s Honda CB 7" headlight with a chrome ring I'll ship it to you for $20. Pics here: http://imgur.com/a/O0IDW#0

Liking it so far man.

Seeing as I lost posted progress 2 years ago, I'll update on a little progress that has happened since I started college (Mechanical Engineering) in 2011. Right now the goal is to get her road worthy first and then I'll dig deeper.

Here's some pics from last summer.

Since these pics I've rebuilt the forks, properly attached my quick fix fairing, chop up the front fender, and put some flat black on said fender.

Right now she runs pretty good besides a vacuum leak in the petcock. So I've got a rebuild kit enroute and I just need to get the new MC installed and she should be rideable. Goal is to have her make the trip from my folks place in the Twin Cities to my house in Milwaukee (350 miles) in the next few weeks and then I should have time to make some quality progress on the cafe/flattracker look I want. Goal is to have her ready for Rockerbox in August.

Next time I'm go to my folks I'll snap some pics and hopefully get her on the road for the first time in 17 years!

Oh and here's my other bike that I just sold to pops, 81 cx500. Other guy is my uncle and his 04 Interceptor
