Protecting new chrome exhaust - question

Been Around the Block
Just bought a new MAC 4:1 exhaust for my CB650 build. What is the best way to treat and maintain the chrome?

I tried the Kreem Blue Shield on my new headers last year. Not sure if it really helped or not, but my pipes haven't turned blue. Then again my bike doesn't run lean either ;) Best protection against really discolored pipes is good tuning, but even so, chrome pipes will discolor and it's a sign you actually ride your bike.

If you have the cash, an internal ceramic coating like Jet-Hot will keep the chrome pretty.

It's not for the light-of-wallet, however.

Rust is the only real way chrome is damaged. Discoloring from heat (as Tim said) just shows you actually ride. Keep the pipes clean and dry, and keep your motor tuned. Wear the discoloration that may occure with pride.

Best thing for that is to ride the bike lots (keeps the pipes from accumulating condensation inside which is how these things end up rusting - from the inside out.

If the bike is going to be stored for a while, a quick wipe with an oily rag will keep moisture off them and protect any chips in the chrome. For really long storage periods, and if you have collector boxes / low points in the exhaust system where moisture can pool, I'd consider taking the pipes off and putting them in the house. But that's pretty extreme, and only needed in certain climates where you get a lot of temp / humidity swings.

I work with a old man that has a huge vintage suzuki collection there all perfect and bone stock he told me that once a year he runs each bike hard and while the pipes are hot he wipes them down with a rag and 2 stroke oil . I dont know if it works or not but if it doesnt, it dont hurt cause his bikes are as pretty in 2012 as they were in the late 60s early 70s. Dont think that there white glove bikes they all are tagged and get used a good bit, mabie he s on to something
