Pulling a SOHC CB750 motor?

Is there a specific procedure to this? I laid the bike on a pile of towels on it's right side and undid all the bolts, so it's loose. Just can't get the frame around it. I've left the rolling chassis intact and know it would be a bit easier if I stripped the frame completely, but I only want to do that if there's no other choice. In desperation I pulled the oil pan hoping to gain a little room, but it made little difference. Do I need to pull the air vent cover on top of the valve cover? Maybe the exhaust studs? Or just try harder?

This is where I left off last night:

Kit I'm not an expert on 750's, but i do seem to remember a very specific thing you have to do, and exhaust studs are ringing a bell. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

They do seem to be a significant part of the equation. They are not pretty so I didn't want to mess with them any more than I had to for fear of shearing one... or eight. But if that's what it takes...

Removing the exhaust studs will indeed give you just the little extra space you will need......

Removed and mounted a K6 and K7 both same issue...... ( mounting with 2 carjacks :) )

While it would help, you don't absolutely have to pull the exhaust studs - frankly I wouldn't as that's a risky thing to do if they're seized and you end up shearing one or something silly like stripping the head.

I've pulled a couple of these things (unfortunately!). Best bet is to lay it on its side, and wiggle the frame up and off the engine. You need at least 1 other person for this, especially given you've got a ton of extra weight on the frame with the front and rear ends on the bike. That's gotta be an extra 100+ pounds.

The front end might be worth dropping seeing as it's pretty easy to do.

Bottom line is you don't have to remove all the bits to do it. It's just a royal PITA.

Ive done it.

Call over a friend, sit down, relax, have a beer or two. Then, go pull everything off the frame. Trying to wiggle the frame off the engine with the fork slapping around and the weight of the rear wheel, shocks and swing arm will be hellish. You can leave the exhaust studs in(I did). I did this outside in the grass. Lay it on its right side and make sure all the engine mounting bolts are pulled out. Also make sure the Z shaped bracket on the rear upper right side of the frame/engine mount is removed. At this point with lots of wiggling and cursing you should be able to lift the frame off the engine. It could take 2 minutes, it might take 20...

Also before that friend leaves have them help you pick up the engine you left in the grass, its a heavy sombish.

OFFICIAL CB750 ENGINE REMOVAL PROCEDURE.

Step one (1):
Disassemble motorcycle entirely.

Step two (2):
Reassemble without engine.

(It's like being in the Navy)

Step three (3):
Profit.

Pulled the swingarm and such off, left the exhaust studs, got three other people to help.

Just happens to be a thread on this at the top over on Honda CB750's right now... HERE.

The post is actually slamming a guy on you-tube but in the thread another member posted...
To remove the engine.
Remove the front forks and swing arm, everything.

Remove all engine mount bolts except the front and rear bottom bolts.
Remove the nuts and foot peg from those bolts.

Remove the top breather cover from the engine. Just that small cover.
Remove the oil filter housing and oil filter.

Lay the frame on its right side on a sleeping bag or furniture blanket.

Remove the two engine mount bolts.
You are now ready to lift the frame off of the engine.
Look at the engine mount tabs and how the engine fits.
Move the frame around to clear the engine then lift the frame.
8)

Now back to the you-tube video of how NOT to do it.
This guy is a DILL-HOLE! Something as simple as "righty-tighty" escapes him. Makes me cringe to watch it so be warned. If this is a member here...STOP IT! Sell the bike and go back to your bong.

Aw man, that was painful.
Cuts the intake manifolds because the clamps are rusty/stripped?! I kept expecting him to hack the frame to get the motor out

I used to just lift them out, only 212lbs of Honda goodness
Remove oil filter, engine breather, sump and oil pump pick up and it comes out relatively easy
I wouldn't even attempt to remove exhaust studs, had to fix too many broken ones

That HURTS just watching it!
Maybe the guy needs a different hobby, like hitting iron balls with a rubber hammer!
OUCH!

I've done it by myself with a hoist and a C bracket and straps. Left the bike upright too. The exhaust studs didn't want to come out so I left them in, but pulled everything else off. There are a few different threads in sohc4.net with pics.

for the install, This way seems too easy... hang the motor, move the bike onto the motor.

hahaha, that is awesome!!! F me and my f'n lower back if that works!

Never in a million years thought about "hanging" a motor like that!

However, I have attempted/completed some pretty shady ways to remove/install motors.

BCBarker you did that all wrong,
because the bike didn't end up on its side and the engine didn't fall over either...

That is how they do it on Cafe Racer TV...

I have found stripping everything and laying the bike on its side to be the easiest. Use plenty of padding and pipe insulation to protect the frame and motor. There are many threads on SOHC forum with this and other methods. When installing rebuilt motor, leave off what you can (starter motor, stator, etc) to make it lighter and easier.
