QT50 Yamahopper Cafe - Issues

Re: QT50 Yamahopper Cafe - Might hit the 1/2 ton

Cloudrider got bored today and did some work on the clip ons.

The right one needs a little cleaning up but other than that they look great! And the angle irons are just there to get them lined up properly.

Re: QT50 Yamahopper Cafe - Might hit the 1/2 ton

Yeah kwazy, your brother is a lot better welder than I am. Just a couple spots I need to do some clean up with the grinder and hit with some weld. I'm looking foward to getting the rear shock mount set next so we can figure out how much we need to extend the frame down tube and then get the top tubes and seat tubes set.

Re: QT50 Yamahopper Cafe - Might hit the 1/2 ton

Thanks for all the compliments guys.

The angle of the rear extension is a bit less steep than the mock up picture so I'm interested to see what that does to our shock mount placement. It really shouldn't be much different. Same idea. We are planning on chopping out the shock mount from the original frame and lowering the swing arm between 2 and 3 inches from stock. This will determine how much we need to extend the down tube so that it will be appropriately proportioned.

Re: QT50 Yamahopper Cafe - Might hit the 1/2 ton

Had a little time last night to work on stuff. Stuck the frame back on the rear assembly to get an idea of where to put the shock mount. Once the shock mount is in we can determine the front extension. We cut the mount out from the piece of the frame we originally took off. It was kind of a pain to get out cause apparently Yamaha thinks fat people ride scooters with all the welds they put on that thing.

Re: QT50 Yamahopper Cafe - Might hit the 1/2 ton

Got a good 3 or 4 hours of work in today.

We got the front end put in and stretched the frame.

We began building the top tube and the seat tubes but we had to figure out where the tank would sit.

Cloudrider found 180 mandrel bends at Columbia River for really cheap!

We've still got some work to do on the frame but I'm happy with what we got done today.

Re: QT50 Yamahopper Cafe - Progress

I think the seat ended up being a little longer than I wanted but we can shorten it up no problem.

Forgot to post this earlier. The stock headlight assembly from the QT50 has the lamp integrated in with the reflector and lens. A new one is actually pretty pricy (look it up on ebay, they're like 80-90 bucks). We found a new headlight assembly that uses H4 bulbs for a much better price.

Re: QT50 Yamahopper Cafe - Progress

WAIT!

You didn't use a frame jig to build that (clasps hands over eyes) oh no! You'll be killed! :D

Re: QT50 Yamahopper Cafe - Progress

How could I have been so ignorant?! If only I'd used a frame jig I could have avoided instability at high speeds (i.e. 35mph)

Thanks for that Huge compliment Erskine. Hope we can meet your expectations with the rest of the build.

Re: QT50 Yamahopper Cafe - Progress

Small update.

We welded on bosses for the tank mount. I forgot to get a pic of that, I'll post it later.

We got the tail shortened up and the top hoop welded on.
