Whoa, now that's a rusty crank Justin.I did a bit of Ebay searching and found a good crank and connecting rod cheap.it will be here by Friday and now I don't have to worry about cleaning up my rusty crank. I ran all the parts to the bike shop on my lunch break and they will clean everything in their ultrasonic cleaner.I should have all the parts in time so we can assemble it this weekend.

It handles great, much more solidly than the original QT50, and you are right, it is a blast to ride. Ben (kwazykid) will have it with him in Ohio next month so you'll have to see it for yourself. The original QT50 front forks are scary flimsy so the XL75 forks, larger front wheel and increased wheelbase make a vast improvement. It's great to have a front brake that actually works too. We will give the handling a bit more of a test when we get the stronger engine on it and get the speed closer to 45. With the tired old engine we have in it now, I doubt we are hitting 30 mph.

We started putting the engine back together yesterday evening. We got everything out in the driveway, set it up and got one crank bearing in, then there was a flash rainstorm We quickly gathered everything and put it in the garage to wait out the rain. After the rain stopped we pulled some stuff back out and struggled with the second bearing but finally got it in. The case went together pretty smoothly after that. Then we got the super complicated single-speed transmission installed. We were booking along pretty good until we discovered that we didn't have a kick-starter seal. So that is on order and we should be able to complete the engine next week.
Here's the only picture I took yesterday. The rain kinda threw a wrench in things.
I finished the hotter engine assembly this morning. This evening after it cools back down a bit I should get it installed on the bike and get a first run. I have no clue how close the carb will be so I am expecting a bit of rejetting will be required. Here's some pics of the engine.
This shows the cover plate we made to block off the oil injector pump.
We made an adapter for the flange mount carb. After hitting it with the wire wheel, we shot it with clear lacquer. Most of the fabricated steel parts are finished in that manner on this bike. I also wire brushed and clear coated the aluminum oil pump cover.

Almost done!
Well, I got the new engine installed along with the new pipe and 16mm carb. I turned on the fuel, kicked it over and it fired right up. I let it warm up a bit and then took it out for a ride around the block. It definitely needs upjetting and I left the choke on partially to make sure I wasn't running too lean. About 10 minutes into the test ride, it died and I found that I have no spark now. I swapped the easy things first: the coil, the CDI unit and once it started again but only for about 15 seconds and then I had no spark again. I have a feeling i have an ignition charge coil that is acting intermittently. I think the flywheel side of the case had some water in it before I got it so it doesn't really surprise me. Well, tomorrow, it's swap out the stator plate from the running engine and I am pretty sure it will be running again and I can proceed with the tuning. Oh, maybe we better get a kickstand installed too, I don't think kwazykid want's to carry that wood block around everywhere.
I pulled the stator off the running engine and put it in the new engine. Ignition problem solved. It started second kick and after warming it up a bit, I rode it pretty hard for about 15 minutes. That should have seated the new rings in pretty well. I'll let it cool an hour or so and do it again. I will put my GPS speedo in my pocket and see what it hits next ride. Also, I'm finding the pipe doesn't really come on until around 4k rpm so the low end is pretty doggy now. That may be because the engine is still new but it may just be the characteristics of the pipe. Once it hit 4k or so, BAM, the power boost is amazing. I still had the choke barely on also so I'll upjet one step now during the cool down period. On the final stretch now.
