Would a tank from a 1980 cb 750 fit my 79 cm400t?

I don't know about an exact swap, but check the capacity of each tank to see that they are at least close. Then you can either grab the old tank and head to a salvage yard and try to match it up or go to www.bikebandit.com and bring up both frames to see how closely they resemble each other.

With varying degrees of work, almost any tank will fit!

Not sure, but when I looked at putting a CB tank on my '80 CM400, it looked like it wouldn't make a perfect swap. The coil on your CM will be in the way and the front mounting grommets are a touch too wide.

All that can be handled in less than hour of work, but FYI.
