Race bike build

The real weak spot on 550 is where 'seat' tubes meet top 'tube'.
It really does hinge in the middle. You already cut out sidepanel mounting tabs, need to put something back in there and do front as well
Use thinner sheet and gusset it as far forward as you can (probably need to fit engine/carbs and see if you can get them back out before final welding)
All the swing arm needs is a cross brace in front of tyre, make it out of 30mm dia 2~3mm thick tube and 'dent in' for tyre clearance ( I used an old fork tube, heavy but real strong ;D)

So here's how the setup looks.

Ah, you got it huh? Was everything kosher? How about those brand new Shinko's?
Good luck man, glad to see you got it all, and thanks for the purchase!

Exactly, here's similar info from John Bradley's "The Racing Motorcycle: A Technical Guide for Constructors Vol2"

I would look into tubular bracing (triangulation) wherever possible if you want to get that chassis as stiff as poss. I once saw an article where a KZ or GpZ frame was dramatically improved in stiffness between swingarm pivot and headstock by triangulating between the front downtubes.

He's saying the gussets in my example are less than optimal because they aren't placed right on the tubes. Compare those to this example:

The good examples here are on the outside of the tube, instead of being more onthe inside. See how these have a curvature to them as well? Read more about it here. This guy is like Stephen Hawking's brother or something he's so damn smart.

Ya know... I thought that rim and tire looked familiar... It's because they sat in my garage for a while attached to Brandon's CBR!
Just chimin in to say that I love this build and also that anything technical that CrazyPaJamas types is golden.
Good luck and i look forward to watching this build!

wheres the update on this build?! i need to know how that swing arm comes out as im looking at doing the same thing on my cb500. hopfully it all lines up cant wait to see this thing finished.

Sorry for the long delay, but since last posting life's just gotten in the way of hobbies. I'm still gathering parts and tools, but I've nixed the idea of the CBR arm so I can keep the wheelbase as short as possible. I'm still cringing at the thought of the cylinder head.
On a side note, this build process has made me realize more than ever that having the right tool is paramount. I'm having to spend money to buy them and it's raising costs right now, but it'll really help in the future should I need to do construct or modify something. Anyone got a blanchard grinder I can buy real cheap?? :)
