Learning from the best. I just picked this bad boy for $550. This will be next years project.
It starts right up, but need a new battery, tires, new mufflers, fork seals and boots, seat re upholstered, Ignition switch. Since I need all that, I will Cafe this bike .

Definitely the perfect cafe project, Eddie. Couldn't be better!

Just wanted to introduce myself!

I'm fairly new to the bike scene...I've been working in a metal shop for the past year and a half and in the meantime fell in love with cycles.
Glad there are others reaching out!

I recently acquired a 72' CL350 for a winter project----I'll post pre-op pics soon.

Welcome to the asylum, Lauren!

Best be careful letting people know around here that you work in a fab shop - you'll be flooded with requests! :)
No worries - will gladly rebuild carbs and forks in exchange for metal forming....

Rookie slip!!!

Ha, I guess I should also be more specific 8)
I work for an artist/architect---mostly do work for the aesthetic side. I'm no machinist but I can weld and think on a thing or two

That bike has a TON of potential - love the high pipe. What are your plans for it?

Cafe racers are functional art - creativity with a purpose - the true "art of the motorcycle".

Sound like you have capability to do some sheet metal fabrication? Custom tanks, fenders, bodywork? Good stuff.

Welcome to the group! Hope to meet you out one of these days... It is about time for us all to schedule another get together soon.

Yeah, the next monthly (4th Wednesday) is between Christmas and New Years, but that is a long ways off. The Ton Ups meet in Durham Friday night. That could make for a cool run (very!) I think nightime temps are supposed to get down low. A good night to be running an air-cooled machine!

Keep the high pipes! Love those things!

+1 on that. I am plugging in GTO high pipes on the 350 GTR.

So no one is up for a run to Durham tomorrow, huh.

Ah yes...the high pipe!
It's honestly one of the things I've had the hardest time with. Nice to hear that you guys are for it.
I've been pretty unsure...mostly because it sits right up against my ankle/calve. (I'm only 5'3")
I've thought of high-temp painting it (black), cutting it back and adding baffles as well as making custom heat shields
Any suggestions?

cafetbird,
sheet metal fab isn't out of the question but oddly enough I don't have a lot of experience with it.
might lead you to ask--well...what do you have experience with? (understandably)
a lot of stainless steel work, fiberglassing, TIG welding, rod bending, etc.

my work's website is: www.mcconnellstudios.com
they're all matt mcconnell's designs and a team and myself fabricate his stuff :)

oh yeah and Cafe racers are functional art - creativity with a purpose - the true "art of the motorcycle".
count me in cafetbird!

thanks for the welcome guys!
cheers

I would love to go, just because is so close to my job, but today I just about lost my voice. I don't want to pass it on. I had to get worse before I got better, right?

Welcome to the site and crew, IHPEGRAM. Hope to meet you at our next meet at Naper Tandy's in Down town Raleigh.

I thought the CL had 2 heat shields, one for the driver, and one for the pillion - could be mistaken though.

One thought would be the classic pipe wrap - pop with many cafe riders.

Comes to make me think we should add a tech discussion thread in here! It probably wouldn't hurt to plan a group get together occasionally at someone's garage for tech support...

The 29th, Wednesday. I think what happened was that, last time we met on a tuesday and maybe Scot thought of the date for Dec 28th somehow. But as far as I know, we're meeting on Wednesday this time around.
