Rate my idea: Put bike in Subaru sedan

How crazy would it be to: pick up a bike from craigslist, tear it apart, put in Subaru?

Let me add some details:
I have tools, I know how to use them, this isn't my first bike. Also, this is a sedan, not a wagon.

I'd most likely be solo and working in the cold outside some stranger's house.

I think the motor would sit nicely up front, seatbelted. The frame, etc would go in the backseat. The triple trees/handlebars into the trunk.

Any input?

go for it. field expedience is always cool. I had a minivan to pick mine up with, still had to do some disassembly tho. Good luck

Take the seats out buy a clown suit and pick up loose woman on the way and make them pay for there sins forgit the bike spend the money on a shovel and garbage bags just kidding i aggree with ringo and the clown suit isnt gonna be cheap
Ive stuffed several bikes in my volvo sedan its ruff on the car

What you gonna do it there is a bolt thats rounded off or a stuck axle bike that have been together for 40 years dont always come apart easy

I'd do it why not is it leather? F*** it ruin the leather we're talkin a motorcycle here....Get It quick before someone else snatches it with their pickup truck!

Away at school, no luck. No hitch.

No trailer hitch for a U-Haul? Or friends/family with a truck?

I thought about putting heavy painter's plastic down on the seats...

Plastic sheets are good, but throw some old towels or blankets or something over top of the plastic. Doesn't take much to rip plastic and pour oil onto the seat.

Ask the seller to break some bolts loose for you first - steering stem, axles, clutch & throttle cables, etc. With the front end and rear tire off, the frame and motor should fit in the back seat. Hopefully.......

What bike is this btw? And where are you located?

Yeah, post up your location. There's a good chance there's a DTTer near you.

I'm in Central WI (Stevens Point). Bike is kz400 (~70mi SSE). Luckily it has a title and is missing enough parts, running rough enough that I just might be able to afford it.

No price listed, I asked what he wants and that's as far as we've gotten. $300ish or under and I'll try it...

what size of bike? bring an impact wrench with you and some wd40. and some garbage bags to put the tank and motor and oil tank in. dont put the motor in your front seat, it will leak all over.

Just a little 400 twin. I'm planning on folded heavy painter's plastic + a tupperware storage bin for motor- or just leaving it in the frame and putting the whole works in the reinforced backseat.

This has become a sad proposition, my good friend here at school passed on Saturday. We had planned on picking up a bike together (his truck)- would have had more fun in the process than the outcome.

This was done at Kiley's last October during the Barber Festival - watch for us in 2012!

That's what I'm talking about!

Nice work!

Wish I would've kept my old full-size Ram van. That old beast held a kz650 with TONS of room to spare for months!

Take the back seat out and you're good to go. On a number of occasions I stripped the Kriedler and stuffed it in the back of my Mini and piled the camping gear on to and went racing.

Funny you should ask. I brought home a CB350 inside my Impreza years ago, but I had the wagon which made things relatively easy. Very doable, just bring along some plastic containers to keep all the loose bits organized. Lay plywood on car seat under engine.

Now that's some good thinking! I'm pretty sure the seat comes out with like 4 bolts. Great idea.

I settled on $200 with the guy, but he has it involved in some trade too so I won't know until Sunday. Kind of pissed about that.

the beauty of craigslist trading/buying is it's never over.....One time after searching for days for a cheap project bike i finally got through the $100 Harley mirrors all the way down to the $1 stuff....and what did i find but an entire YZ250 (no motor) for $30....Same deal too had to take it apart to fit it in the Subie....Keep searching One day you will trade the suzuki you got for a leafblower, for a Ducati
