Hey Steve
The build is looking great. I am in two minds whether or not i should go the cafe route on my cx or if i should keep it as a daily (i need room to put stuff on it) and look for something else. One thing i was trying to figure was how I might make a set of rear sets for a cx. Do you have any plans in that area?

Been looking at some of the Guzzi rearsets for ideas, got a few now. Changing from 1 down 4 up to 1 up 4 down makes it easier so I might end up doing that.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Cut the old mufflers off as they were welded to a PO homemade crossover setup, this will be cleaned up and painted and modded to allow me to slip on my new 17" Reverse cone mufflers but in the meantime I couldn't resist seeing how the V would sound with just the headers and crossover. Getting to the point of thinking about colours, British Racing Green and black are on the cards at the moment.

No Mufflers

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Welded some pipe to the old H box so I could slip my new mufflers on, louder than I thought and a bit tinny so I'll baffle them a little more and see how it goes.

Some pics with the new mufflers, the nice clean bit of exhaust between pipe and muffler is the new section I welded in. It kicks the mufflers out and up a bit which I think gives it a nice line. Starting to look pretty tough for an old CX 8)

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

your bike is officially inspiration for my CX500 build.

i might have a line on a CX500 turbo without a title for real cheap that i may have to research into swapping over into the bike i have sitting. ;D

i wish i had more time from travelling for work to start on the bikes i got. they're all still sitting where i found them baking in the desert as of right now, i've been trying to line up a truck to borrow and cruise out there to get them :(

just wondering, what is holding the seat up between the back of the tank and the raised part of the subframe? it appears to just be floating right there.

Cool :)

The front of the seat is on the rear tank mount, I had to trim down the rubber but the bolt holding the tank down will also hold down the fron tof the seat.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Very nice looking cx500.

Ican't seem to find these good deals on the bike like you guys

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

First off, hats off with the fitment of the chambers! Very nice indeed. Loving it!

green91shopsurplus - Steer clear of the turbo version, more hassle than its worth. You can bore the 500 to a 650 though apparently.

Disco - Got the bike buying blues? Well, way I see it you get three choices: Right bike, right price, right now. You can pick any two!

Can we hear it run with the mufflers on also?

I did this vid, the wind is mucking up the pickup of the mic though so it doesn't sound quite right, lost a lot of the low down sound it has, I'll try and get a better one on the weekend or later today.

EMGO Mufflers on CX 500

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

I love the way the mufflers look, but the exhaust note with out the mufflers is awesome!!! Can you tune the mufflers to give it a little deeper note?

Is that the original tank? This is a pretty cool bike to cafe. Good luck.

Yep, it's the stock tank, if you search on here for CX500 most of the posts will be about using the tank on other bikes ;)

Yep, the end caps are removable and I'll muck about with the baffles. It does sound better than the vid sounds though, I think the wind in the mic limited what it recorded or how it sounds as it doesn't sound much different to what it did with no mufflers.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Welded up my frame for the fibreglass seat to mount onto, then tested it. No flex and all feels solid.

Here's the pics, the frame will be removable and the seat will bolt to the frame, just need to weld some tabs on to it to mount the seat onto. The front of the frame will have a plate on it that will slip under the tank mount like the stock seat does, the rear will have tabs welded to it that will bolt to some stock nuts on the bike frame. Another step almost done.

Once the seat is padded I'll look at moving the pegs if I need to.

And without me, I'll need to figure out something to fill the gap between seat and frame but it's waaaaaay down the list at the moment.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

Took the bike down the culdesac and back again, didn't take it out of first as I had no gear on but being a dead end street didn't worry too much, I could have ridden the pushy faster ;) This is the first time it's moved more than a few meters since I took it off the trailer when I brought it home. I'll have to gear up on the weekend and take it for a proper spin up the street, it sounds too nice to just have it idle in the driveway...

The seat is just stuck to the frame with double sided tape until I'm sure of positioning and have the tabs welded on

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

i'm lovin it!

just out of curiosity, how tall are you? i'm 6'3" and wondering about rear set location on mine when i start working on it.

i'm getting a similar styled seat and eyeballing a couple of 'guzzi' styled half fairings to run.

those pipes also sound pretty good for the video too.

Re: Ratty Cafe - CX500

I'm pretty much spot on 6ft, it's actually not too bad without rear sets but the 'Shadow' (Oz model designation) has the pegs set back a little anyway. I guess with a decent run I'll know if it's uncomfortable but right no no problems. The biggest thing for me was making sure the seat wasn't too low, once padded it'll be a bit higher but any lower and it would be too uncomfortable without lowering the pegs.
