RC51 rear sets on CB350

I got my RC51 rear sets tonight. I plan on working on my rear battery tray that will eventually be hidden by a cut up yamaha DZ400 tank :) I'll try and post some pics and info on how I use the rear sets. One nice thing is that the stock CB350 brake switch will work with these 03 RC51 rear sets like factory. It seems Honda hasn't changed the rear brake switch much in 30 years lol. I guess I should start a thread in tanks and seats too. It might be easier to write up a how too after I'm done instead of during the process . . . i dunno . . .

Do it as you go along!!..
People might be able to contribute ideas and suggestions to problems that you may encounter as you do the build!!..
Personally, Im curious to how you are going to set up the rear brake rearset with the brake drum rod.

The rear sets are mounted with 1 inch clamps and 1 inch steel spacers. I'm going to switch to aluminum spacers when i find some. the stock rear brake rod is going to be used, cut down re-threaded and bent to meet a 2.5 to 3 inch piece of steel extended upward bolted to the rear brake lever that is "notched" so no movement at the attachment point will be had. I am going to make the pegs hard mounted instead of hinged because now they move more rearward at their hinged point and may move when the foot controls are used while riding. 2 nice square spacers would be nice to use but if i can't find any I think nuts will do with a bolt running through and a nut on the outside. heres some pics

the rear brake drum lever has already been flipped, i learned that here :)

some other stuff i'm working on . . .

it seems everything needs to be done before everything . . . ADD is strong in this one :) i tend to work on 10 different areas of the bike in a 2 hour period and get a lot done but complete nothing lol . . and its so much more fun than fixing odyssey sliding doors.

The rear sets are complete now. The tank has been shaped and the front capped with sheet metal. after it is painted i'm going to make a small vinyl wrapped pad for it. enjoy the pictures. any comments and or advice are welcome.

Nice work! Man that bike is really coming along. The rear sets look awsome. Be sure to let us know how well they hold up after some hard riding. i'm thinking of doing something very similar....once i get off my ass and get to work. :D

wow those rearset controls look familiar. but you did something wierd to the rear brake pedal where plunger to the master cylinder shaft used to be! Those are pretty sharp bends on the brake rod. Do you think it will hold up and not flex?. lol. I read a post on another site where someone did the same thing. Apparently the sharp bends on the rod flexed to much and he had better luck after he straightened it out a bit more.

Sounds like a post on here too... maybe Gordon's enfield?

Another member (olddog) posted another way of running this sort of setup with straight linkage...

Definately not RC51 rearsets... so If I don't know what I'm talking about let me know...
But rearsets linked to the original location with the shaft, rather than to a bent rod to compensate for the different placement.

... Love that amination. :D

I'm actually using the same rearsets for my cb350. I just finished up my solo seat and clubman bars and i need rearsets!!! Other than the actual rearsets, clams and spacers, what else did you need? rods, rodends?

Thanks a TON!

hay man love the rearsets. i'm looking for some my self. how much were these types of rearsets and where abouts did you
get them??????
like the build so far, what colors are you going with it???????
well keep up the good work, and keep posting..
later.

I like the idea of using the rearsets to activate the factory linkage but where are you guys getting the arm with the flat tab sticking up that goes where the factory brake pedal mounts for the rod to pull back on?

i cut mine out of some scrap aluminum and then had a bud weld it on. here's a couple pics of the process

its worked fine so far...and i've had some close calls where i really leaned on it. Good luck!

I was looking for the piece that goes on the factory brake cam.I see on your bike drackett_19 that you just cut the factory one down and you have a hole drilled in the round pipe sticking up.On other bikes in the post I see that they just have a flat tab sticking up instead,is this off of another bike?

What a lot of folks do is just cut off the brake arm and bolt the linkage to the leftover stub, as shown in the pics above.

You can also grind the stub right down and weld a tab to it. That part is near-impossible to find. I think most people just end up making their own.

yeah you should be able to find a brake lever arm on ebay or somewhere for cheap if you're worried about cutting yours up. Once you get one you can make it look as good as you want with a sawzall or hacksaw and bench grinder. i left mine pretty crude because its not a big concern of mine.

cheers. and post some pics.

where are you guys getting these frame clamps. I did a quick google search and turned up with things ranging from 9.99 to $50 a pair.

edit:

whats the consensus on something like this?

or this

or these

the third ones you listed are what i used. bought mine from JP Cycle for about $8 each, Dennis Kirk also sells them. 2 seasons, they've been fine.

do you mount some sort of a bushing between the clamp and the frame? I was thinking it would be good to slip a ring of rubber in there. It seems like it will hold better and be less likely to ruin the powder coat on the frame.

yeah if you think you may be removing the clamps down the road, something in between would be a good idea. i didn't put anything in there to protect the tremclad.
