Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Thanks Bruno, I am really happy with how this bike has evolved. Sometimes I like to look back at what this bike started life as. It helps keep me motivated. LOL

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

just for fun i weighed the bike 289lb. as it is right now. i can deal with that. add the battery, seat, and 3 gallons of gas should finish around 325-330. that's lighter than a dr400.....i think.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Not a problem man, you deserve it. The before and after shows how much awesome went into this thing! haha. Now go ride the heck out of it! (and since I've got no time to build a bike at the moment, you inspired me to go pick up a 77 DT250...damn you!!!) ::)

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

DT250..that should be fun. What are your plans for it? I used to have a DT400 (wish I still had it) They are great old bikes. I rode mine everywhere.

Ha. DT's are taking over.

I love this scoot, man. The transformation has been incredible.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

I got my seal savers and fork seals in the mail! Operation tear down is about to commence.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

It took me 6 months to put it together and 47 minutes to take it apart. I will finish tearing the frame down, then I need to finish all the welds I couldn't get to with the engine in. And start prepping for paint. In the mean time I will be rebuilding the forks and cleaning up the wheels and mounting tire etc.......So much to do. I also need to clean/paint/polish the engine. It doesn't really have any oil leaks or mechanical problems, so I think I am just going to run it as is for the summer. I will save the go fast bits for something to do next winter if I get bored.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Nice work dude, looking forward to seeing her go back together all fresh and clean......

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

I finished stripping down the frame. I ran into a bit of an engineering snafu when I tried to remove the rear shock. I put one of my sub frame braces in the way of the shock bolt. I had to notch the tubing to remove it....doh! I think I figured out how to fix it. I don't have any pictures of that yet. I did glass up my seat pan so I can get it off to the "seat guy". I also pulled my forks apart and installed new seals and dust seals. The springs and guide bushings were within specs according to the manual. I cleaned up the fork lowers. I decided not to polish them since this is going to be a "dirty" bike. I put in some fresh bel-ray fork oil and 8psi on top of that, then some seal savers and the forks are ready for action. I also picked up my paint today.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

I've never heard of those seal savers (I'm more of a street-bike guy ::)) Are they spendy? Looks like a great idea.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

I have always wondered why street bikes don't use them. They come in all different sizes/colors and they are cheap. I paid $20 for these. You can buy off name brand ones for $9.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

Today I dropped my seat pan off to get upholstered. I might start painting this weekend. I Have Yamaha Blue, white, and Crystal grey(metallic silver). Any ideas for a paint scheme. At the moment I'm thinking about painting the frame Blue and the tank and hump silver with some type of blue or white accents. The front fender and headlight will be blue. Any pics or suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

I actually liked it with the red, white, and blue in your mock up with the headlight and front guard...

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport)

I thought about adding some red, but I wasn't sure. Do you have any pictures of what you are visualization?
