rear progressive monoshock, with a link. hows it work?

Trying to understand this concept, as it sounds like this is what i need to make my junk handle better off road. the lower rear shock link design, its for progressive dampening. I get that, It absorbs more on jumps and large hits, and softer over smaller things. heres how I understand it to work.

as the swing arm travels up, the lower link moves the lower shock pivot point further away from the pivot point, so basically as the arm travels up in its arc the amount of force transfered to the spring and shock is reduced so that the shock can effectively remove the force. I know its a progressive formula but basically ill say that in the first 2" of rear wheel travel the shock is soft, then from there to full compression, stiff. that right?

2nd part of the question. how to mess with it. If i were to modify it, could the length of one of the linkages be modified so that the shock moves more or less depending on what i need? or what?
