Rebuild or Replace?

Been Around the Block
So the time has come to actually re do my my 76 CJ360,
Would it be easier for me to re build the engine (which has to be done regardless) and re build it better, or would it be easier and better if I bought a newer engine that ran, either a stocker engine or maybe a newer engine from a street bike or something?

Thanks in advance gents
Josh

There are no "newer" engines that bolt in. Modifying the frame and the "new" engine to fit, require as many skills as rebuilding the old one.

You may find a rebuilt engine, I've seen some advertised. But as Icontango mentioned, you may not know exactly what was done or not.

If you have the skills and ability and the right tools, re-building yourself is a great learning experience. Some people don't want that, and only want to ride.

So the question ends up being personal.

Me? I would rebuild it myself. My motorcycle is not my primary transportation, so I can afford for it to be apart for a while, I like learning how it works, and I know when I am done, that either every issue is resolved, or at least I am aware of any issues that I didn't fix.

There is a special satisfaction in riding a bike that you personally took apart, repaired, and re-built. You do not get this any other way.

I do have friends, who if they asked me the same question, though, is to have someone else do it. They have few mechanical skills if any at all.

So, if you think you can, you can, and should do it.
If you know you can't, then pick another option.

Hmm.... sounds good I think I will re build just to give me something to do this winter, Ive done car engines for race cars and imports a few times. In yalls opinion is the bike more or less difficult?

There's fewer parts in a bike engine, less stuff to lose. IMO they are easier to manage that a car engine.

I WOULD run down at least the 6 speed tranny that came in the CB/CL models. Should be a direct change out for your current 5 speed.

That's on my to do list as well.
