Rebuilding a 400F: Piston and Gasket help

ronnie

Calm down and sail on
Alright, well I recently purchaced a used 400F engine for my 350F and I'm going to do the 466cc piston kit. There are two kits on eBay for this, one is from Austrailia, and the other is Japan. The one from Aus. is way more expensive than the one from Japan. My question is this, is there a reason for the difference in price (quality or metal used, better rings, gasket better, etc)? The shipping is comparible so its not that either.

Also, i was looing on ebay looking for complete engine gasket sets, some are cheaper than others, is there a certain brand I should stick with or is a set a set? I saw on a thread here that OEM or NOS is the best ones that last... IF anyone could shed any light on this that would be very helpful as I am ready to tear the old one down when i get off the ship!

The kits are the same. The Australia kit is more expensive because it is sold 3rd party. The Japanese kit is straight from the source. The Vesrah kits are very good. I am using one on my build. The piston kit comes with the head gasket (larger piston holes than stock).

Thanks a bunch! I'll get those ordered tonight then.. Do you know anything about the gasket sets (not the bore kit gasket)?

Thats what I meant by the vesrah. Its a brand. They are a little pricey, but completely seal. Great kits that I have personally used myself.

I just called my pops at home, the engine was delivered! He thought it was someone's engine for their boat haha, didnt even look.. Good thing I called, someone might have drove off in their boat with a motorcycle engine haha.. Just playing. (but there's an idea for ya!) And I ordered the gasket and piston kits! I want her on the road!

This popped into my head today, do I need sleeves for this kit or will it be fine without them? I saw on tt400 that his 400f had sleeves but that was for the 496cc bore.. If anyone has any light on this, dont be shy haha.

No sleeves necessary. The 400f stock sleeves have plenty of meat left to bore to 466.

Thanks, I get off the ship Tues.. So i haven't had a chance to crack it open and look. I feel like a kid on Christmas haha, ready to break into all those boxes when i get home!

I dont think so.. You can get away with the 350f using 400f stock pistons to bring your 348cc to 408cc.. That would be cheaper than what I'm doing.

They are different outer diameter. The people putting 400 top ends on their 350s have to bore the case out for the jugs to fit on.

Alright, well I'm home for a while now and I have time to finish the engine. My next step is boring out the jugs for the new pistons.

I was wondering if anyone knew the clearances for the new pistons (rings, expansion) I couldn't find anything for this in the manual i have. Its a 466 kit. I just don't want to bore it too small and expansion happens from heat and it wears or locks up..

ronnie I will be putting one of these kits in my 400F. Let me know how you go with the overbore gap for the piston clearance and also where you net out on the jetting for the kit too :)

Do you know what comes in those kits Kanticoy? I couldn't find a comprehensive list although some were suggesting items like valve seals too.
