Remove KZ400 side covers?

Are they crucial for anything? Do I "need" them? I know this might seem oddly simple but I'm at work and curious :)

Thanks!

They (only) cover the unsightly battery, airbox and a bit of electrical. Not necessary but obviously missing without.

I can't recall ever seeing a KZ400 up close so can only offer some generalizations.

On some bikes, the side covers act as a splash guard to whatever electrical components that may be hiding underneath. And they offer a little bit of (weak) theft deterrence - some lazy thieves won't steal want they can't see.

If you have the time, you can replace the seat with a fiberglass hump type. You then move all electrics and the battery (Shoeri Lithium / Iron phosphate). This will open up the triangle. If you go whole hog, use a die grinder to remove the brackets left behind, smooth the welds with a Dremel and Bondo and repaint the affected areas.

I just completed the task with a 78' Kawi KZ 650 B and it turned out very nicely. Good luck !
