removing Honda badge mounts from a tank

Does anyone have experience with this? I'd like to remove the mounts that are on the side of the tank and fill the void when repainting for a clean look.

It looks like its spotwelded in 3 spots. I was just going to carefully grind it out with a small dremel wheel. Any better ideas? Looking for advice / tips !!!

Fill and sand, fill and sand, puddy and sand, then sand fine and sand finer!
Then you may be ready to paint! or sand some more ;D
 
Yea, really cool. dig the shape, anymore shots?

Thats the paint I want on my tank, black with that trim...I wonder if it would fit up to my 450?

So you didn't grind off the bracket, you just filled over it?
I'm worried that over time, any air gap in there might cause problems (bubbling or cracks due to temperature changes/moisture)
Have you had any issues?

Yea this is a CB500T tank.
 
I wouldnt worry too much about it cracking. Someone had smoothed one of my tanks badges before I got it. I imagine that happened at least 10 years ago because the guy I bought it from said it was painted before he got it. When I removed all the paint and bondo to weld it, i had to dig that stuff out with a pick to make sure it was clean and its tuff stuff. Just make sure you prep the area well. Sand it the best you can to give the bondo something to stick to and when you mix the bondo try to not make a bunch of air bubbles. Usually air pockets in bondo are more of a pain when sanding. mainly because you sand so much then discover an air pocket and then have to put more bondo to smooth that out, but to get that to happen you have to be pretty sloppy. Sand the area with some 180, prep with degreaser, clean with tack cloth, mix bondo, apply, sand with 180,220,400, and paint.

more than likely, it would. I have a CB500T as well, and found that most parts and mounting areas on the 450s are identical. In fact, I'm planning on switching me front end with a 450 front end, as well as using CL450 exhaust...the 500T exhaust is simply retarded, with it's prechamber.
 
I filled it in on my tank, followed the advice as listed above, and it's been fine for a year. I know that's not a long measurement, but nonetheless, I'm pleased with my outcome. I've painted my bike twice, and the best advice I can give you is take your time in the sanding and bondo stages. Having a good surface to paint, that's well prepared makes a HUGE difference in the end product. Make sure you are familiar with the temperature recommendations on the back of the paint. They're not kidding when they tell you it needs to be above a certain temperature for the paint to cure properly. I learned that one the hard way, and had to re-do a bunch of steps, basically an entire do over for the black paintjob I have now.

When I did mine I did remove the tabs first. I just used a small grinding wheel and buzzed off the spot welds. Once that was done I sanded the wells really well then filled it with some FiberPutty. I would worry about not taking them off. One of the most important things in paint/body repair is prep, and without removing the tabs and cleaning/scoring the inside you cant be sure that i'll hold properly without cracking. Its not that much work and its a good piece of mind.

Yeah, just took a square body hammer and pounded them out. I didn't use a rubber hammer like alot of people did here. I did have alot of dimples, but I knew it would need a skim of the bodo so I wasn't worried.
 
Definately do as Turd said or you will end up with the filler lifting with the expansion/contraction and eventually cracking.

Turd, didn't know you are a member here or even had a bike. How is your rod?
 
One other suggestion that comes to mind is to fill it with lead, kinda old school but !?!?!?

Oh one thing i found recently to remove body filler give it a little heat with a propane torch it softens it quite a lot makes it easy to remove, i should know i probably stripped a pound of filler and old paint off my ex tank rear section
