Removing the Bearing Retainer on old hondas ?

I'm looking into replace everything on the rear tire Including the wheel bearings, but there's the bearing retainer that I'm assuming I need a special bearing retainer remover tool to get it off ? Its on a Honda Cb500, and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of what I could use to improvise, or if I can buy the tool online that will work for this specific bike anywhere ?

Somebody else may have more specific experience, but when I asked a mechanic at the Honda dealership about the same thing (he actually does work on older bikes), he said it's usually easier to cut the bearing retainers out and replace them if you can get replacement retainers. 'Said that the retainers usually get so screwed up during the removal process that they're worthless anyway.

Other experiences?

I used a normal set of spring clip pliers but I couldn't squeeze them enough to spread the clip enough. Luckily, they are reversible and I had to manually spread the pliers to get the clip on / off.

I've heard some people go at it with some small screw drivers as well

I think the OP was referring to the screw-in retainer #4:

I bit the bullet and bought the proper tool - I just can't remember what it's called :(

Like a big pair of tweezers with two pins. It works like a pair of pliers, and the pins locate in 2 of the opposite holes, then you just rotate it around. Can even use a hammer on it for more leverage, as long as the pins stay in the holes, you're good. As with all things, if you have the right tools, the job is a lot easier. I've used it enough over the years rebuilding wheels to justify the ($10?) spent.

cheers
