Replacement Forks

This is an absolute noobe question but I am in need of a new set of forks and triple trees. I'd like to upgrade everything to something newer with more adjustability. My question is whether or not the steertube and thusly the headtubes on motorcycle frames vary widely. I have an 1982 XS400RJ so if anyone can set me straight I'd be appreciative.

I'm very familiar with bicycles but motorcycles are a new endevor so any help would be appreciated.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough. If I wanted to swap the entire front end (forks, triple trees, brakes etc) is there a standard steer tube and head tube length or do they vary from bike to bike? thanks

It will vary from bike to bike.

There are different ways to make it work, most that require some modification and fab work, but there are lots of people running more modern front ends on old bikes.

Sorry I don't have a clue what front end would fit your 400 though.

Thanks, thats what I figured but wanted to make sure. I think that with a fork rebuild I'll be more satisfied with my current ones.

Good to know!

Do you know what diameter your forks are?

If they're 36mm you could try swaping forks / lowers / wheel / brakes from a 650 seca to get dual discs, and keep your tripple trees... just a thought.
