required tools

Hey all, FNG here. Just got my first bike a couple of weeks ago 79 GS1000. I also got what I consider to be a great set of starter tools. Lots of sockets with drivers and wrenches. A few electrical things as well. My question is, is there anything you guys have found to be clutch to have when starting to a build? I haven't started getting real heavy into the rebuild but I don't want to hit a wall because I need what might be considered a specialty tool. You guys have been rock stars answering my questions so far and i appreciate it!

I think the tool I had the closest during my tear down was an impact driver. Pair it with a rubber mallet and they help remove those 30 year untouched screws/bolts with ease (well most of the time ???). Not a bad addition to your tool box for $20-$30 for a cheap one. I used some no name brand that I found in a friends garage and still worked great!

+1 on the impact screwdriver, it's a necessity.

GS1000 is a lot of bike for a first ride out - when you say 'into the rebuild' what do you have planned? Is it already running?

+2 on the impact...get a clymer/haynes manual, even better download the suzuki service manual.

Lol, the general consensus is that its a helluva bike. It was more of an opportunity to get a free bike that made me get the 1000. Believe me, I'm scared of the damn thing. But I couldn't pass it up. It doesn't have a battery so I'm not sure the condition of the motor. As luck would have it, my coworker just finished getting certified from a tech school in motorcycle mechanics. He's restored a few bikes now and is basically my guy for everything. So far the Carb rail is off and has a bit of rust and build up in two of them. I'm taking it slow so.I can build up the funds to buy the basics.

if you can find the factory service manual it's the way to go. take it slow, leave yourself lots of room to brake ::)

Excellent point about the service tools! I want to post tons of pictures but I feel like everyone already knows what a bike looks like without a seat, tank and fairings! Haha! I'm just so.new I can't get enough of this site or cafe's period!
